An Section 9C inquest into the death of a man who was found in the River Medina back in 2023, has recorded an open conclusion.
Earlier this month, under Section 9C of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, HM Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray concluded an inquest into the death 29-year-old Nathan John Hobbs, who died on the 20th October 2023.
Official documentation said that at 10:37, Hobbs was found dead lying face down on the mud, close to the water in the River Medina, near the Medina Quay Public House.
The Record of Inquest states that although Hobbs, of Field Place in Newport, was a known long-term drug abuser, he didn’t have a toxic level of drugs or alcohol in his system.
An official cause of death was given as drowning.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police, Fire and Paramedics rushed to the scene following the initial 999 call. HM Coastguard were also dispatched to the scene due to the location of the incident.
HM Coroner Sumeray said that on the balance of probabilities, Hobbs was likely to have fallen into the water whilst intoxicated and then subsequently drowned.
An ‘open’ conclusion was recorded.
