A search and rescue operation is underway at Shanklin this afternoon (Wednesday) after cries for help were heard by members of the public.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor have mobilised to the scene on the Esplanade alongside Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat.
A search is currently underway with Coastguard officers talking to beachgoers to ascertain if they have heard or seen anything of concern.
Meanwhile, the lifeboat is sweeping up and down the coast.
The alarm was raised at just before 13:15.
Today is one of the final days of the school summer holidays with sea conditions choppy, accompanied by a strong breeze.
UPDATE @ 14:45 – Despite a thorough search on both land and sea, nothing untoward has been found.
Coastguard resources are now being stood down from the incident, which is being treated as a false alarm with good intent.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
