Year 6 students of St Blasius Primary Academy have dedicated their creativity and efforts to designing and producing a vibrant and colourful mural for the town of Shanklin.
In 2025, Assistant Principal Miss Jemma Powell initiated contact with Councillor Michael Beston, aiming to forge a closer relationship between Shanklin Town Council and the Academy. This collaboration sought to identify and develop community projects that would benefit the town and its residents.
One such project involved repurposing a redundant signboard at the Atherley Road car park.
The signboard, previously managed by the former South Wight Borough Council until its dissolution in 1995, had long been neglected. Over time, it had become unsightly and was only sporadically used for fly posters, leaving it largely uncared for and without a clear owner.
By 2026, the project reached completion with the installation of the mural onto the signboard, carried out by the ‘Shanklin Men in Sheds’.
Earlier today (Monday), the bright and engaging mural, that encapsulates the unique character of Shanklin depicting its sunny beaches, expansive blue skies, and a seagull or two, was unveiled at the entrance to Atherley Road car park.
Cllr Beston has said:
“Thanks are extended to everyone who contributed to the success of this project, with special recognition for the students of St Blasius Academy for their creativity and hard work.
“This mural stands as a testament to community spirit and may well be the first of many such initiatives in the future.”

well done to everybody involved.
Atherley Road does need sprucing up, such
signs are required along the seafront in Shanklin.
The old sign board in the car park by the Fish and Chip
shop and old telephone box could do with a nice sign.
Well done to the students of St Blasius
ANOTHER great job by the Shanklin Men in Sheds, now operating from Lions Club, Lake.
