The much-loved Appley Manor in Ryde is marking a major milestone this month, celebrating 30 years in business at the heart of the Isle of Wight community.
Since opening its doors in 1995, the family-run venue has built a strong reputation for traditional hospitality, hearty meals, reasonable prices and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere.
Over the past 3 decades, the business has played host to thousands of family gatherings, milestone celebrations and everyday meals, becoming a cornerstone of life in Ryde. Who hasn’t been to Appley Manor at some point, eh?
Paul Brown, who runs the business with his wife Alison, sister Sarah Asher and brother-in-law Charles Asher, says one of the biggest reasons for the Manor’s long-standing success is its staff – with several team members serving for many years.
One of the most remarkable things about Appley Manor is that head chef, Simon Luff, has been a member of the team from the very start, having worked his way up through the kitchen.
Paul told Island Echo:
“The staff are the backbone of the business, their loyalty has been amazing.
“We couldn’t do what we do without them.”
Appley Manor currently employs around 33 people.
The Manor was originally built in 1850 as a grand Victorian gentleman’s residence, before becoming a boys’ preparatory school for some 70 years. The building was partially destroyed by fire in 1993.
When the Brown family purchased the property, it was derelict. They added an extension and transformed the site into the characterful inn it is today.
At full capacity, Appley Manor can cater for 194 covers and boasts a 12-bedroom hotel. It is thought that per annum, as many as 60,000 meals are served.
In a message shared with customers, the team has expressed heartfelt thanks to the community:
“When we first opened our doors three decades ago, we had one goal: to create a welcoming place where good food and good people could come together.
“Since then, our restaurant has grown not just in reputation, but in heart – because of you, our loyal patrons. You’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and everyday moments with us. You’ve supported us through the highs and the challenges. Whether you’re a familiar face who’s been with us since day one or someone who just recently gfond your way to our table, we want to say thank you.
“Your support over the years has meant the world to us. You’ve made us part of your stories, and we’re honoured to be a small part of your lives.”
Although Appley Manor is currently up for sale, it is business as usual for the time being – with food served daily between 12:00-20:00.
Always been a great venue but when businesses are
put up for sale I lose confidence in them.
I wish them well for the future and hope a new buyer
takes over asap.
Why are so many hospitality businesses up for sale on the Island and is it linked to ferry prices ?
The Ferry prices are obviously not helping matters,
neither is the recent Labour budget, it is costing
businesses thousands of pounds more to run.
Also where the Government have taken away money
from pensioners etc, many people have less money in
their pockets for holidays and wining and dining.
It is sadly going to get much worse.
More because there was food poisoning reported two weeks ago
