This is the moment that an ‘incendiary device’ was blown to pieces by the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team in the sleepy village of Wellow late this afternoon (Friday).
Police were called to the West Wight at around 10:45 this morning to reports of the discovery of suspected unexploded ordnance at a residential address, as first reported by Island Echo.
The object was found whilst the homeowner was gardening.
Officers were deployed to the scene and closed part of the road for a time, ahead of the arrival of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts from Portsmouth.
Determining that the device was a potential threat, the decision was taken to carry out a controlled explosion.
The object was placed into a secure box before being blue lighted a short distance to Wellow Top Road, where it was detonated in an isolated field.
