Over 150 islanders packed into the Riverside Centre in Newport last night (Monday) in support of the ‘Say No to the CO2 Pipeline’ meeting, hosted by the Isle of Wight Green Party.
The start of the meeting was delayed by 15 minutes due to overwhelming interest in ExxonMobil’s proposals to construct a gas pipeline across the West of the Isle of Wight, with attendees moving chairs into the largest room and many other residents left standing.
Geology teacher and Green Party spokesperson, Vix Lowthion, gave a presentation about the oil company’s plans plus some background and updates about recent developments, including the pressure on Island landowners to allow access for surveying.
The meeting also heard from Green Party councillor, Claire Critchison, about the establishment of a campaign steering group, followed by many public questions and comments from the floor, chaired by Green Party co-chair Cameron Palin.
Vix Lowthion said:
“Exxon’s extensive proposals for a pipeline from Fawley across the breadth of the island will have a devastating impact on our landscape and wildlife habitats.
“The huge turnout at this meeting demonstrates the strength of feeling against their plans and that islanders are not going to accept the damage to our woodlands and coastal areas. We need to invest in clean, renewable energy – not perpetuate our reliance on oil!”
