Vecta House care home in Newport commemorated Remembrance Day on Sunday 12th November, joining the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a 2-minute silence at 11:00. As well as marking Remembrance Day by proudly wearing poppies and watching the televised service from The Cenotaph, residents took part in therapeutic activities starting off by creating a breath-taking display of cascading poppies. A local group Wroxall Woolies donated over 100 knitted and crochet poppies that were used to create the masterpiece. When finished the artwork was displayed in the reception the for all visitors to admire as they entered the home. Earlier in the week residents joined by their families enjoyed a Remembrance Day concert with live music from Sarah Gerrard. Doreen Nutt a resident at Vecta House, said:
“It is very important that we keep the memories of those who fought alive”
Doreen’s told staff how her father was a Captain Guard and when they lived in Essex in their home called Hampstead her father would have to store ammunition and guns in the home. Doreen would be sent out on her bicycle into the village where she would deliver letters of upcoming meetings. Tanya Everson General Manager at Vecta House, said:
“We have many residents with personal ties to the military and many who have experienced conflict either at home or abroad so it was important to us to mark Remembrance Day and honour the contribution of everyone involved in the World Wars and in subsequent conflicts.2
