The Isle of Wight’s first-ever padel tournament has been hailed a huge success after an action-packed day at Ryde Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday (25th August).
The landmark event showcased the club’s brand-new padel courts—officially opened in July—with 24 pairs (48 players) battling it out from 08:30 right through until 20:00. The inclusive line-up featured 7 women, 5 juniors and 11 visiting players, ensuring a vibrant mix of experience levels in what is the world’s fastest growing sport.
In the Plate Final, father-and-son pairing Gordon and 13-year-old Sam Baker edged past fellow juniors Ed Stolliday and Barnaby King (13) in a thriller, showing just how strong the Island’s next generation of players is.
The Main Draw Semis delivered plenty of drama: Frazer Emms & James Smith defeated Richard Hutchins & James Cooney 7-6 in a nail-biting contest, while Niklas Johansson & Liam Reese cruised through 6-2 against David Cartwright & Simon Jenkins.
That set up a blockbuster Grand Final, with Johansson & Reese claiming the title 6-4 over Emms & Smith. The only break of the match came in the ninth game, before Johansson—the ice-cold Swede—served it out in style.
Organisers have thanked everyone who took part and supported the day. Among those turning heads was celebrity guest Jack Whitehall, who competed gallantly in the so-called ‘group of death’ and impressed spectators with his natural flair on court.
Ryde Lawn Tennis Club’s committee say the tournament marks the beginning of a new era for racket sports on the Island, with plans already being discussed for future padel competitions.
