A quiz night is to be held at Newport Football Club on Friday (5th February) in aid of Cowes Carnival, who last week lost everything from floats to costumes following a devastating blaze at Medina Yard in Cowes.
A special one-off quiz night has been arranged with 100% of the event proceeds going to Cowes Carnival to help get them back on track in their 120th year.
Local businesses are being invited to come and join in the fun, and to help raise awareness.
Stuart Ellis, a member of the Cowes Carnival Committee said:
“We are a Community group who lost everything. We did not even come out of the fire with a screwdriver. However, we were just one of the victims; others lost businesses that had taken years to build; they are left with no income. Many, like us will have to try and survive for many, many months until insurance pays out. We cannot do this unless we have Community help.
“We are celebrating our 120th year and all of us at Cowes carnival are determined this will happen. We have to find a workshop and a new trailer to start building from scratch, so we’ll be working against the clock for the next 6 months.
“Many people have said to us take a year out; in carnivals that does not work. We have to fight our way out of this and be ready in July to take our place with other carnivals across the island.
“We would like to thank Newport Football Club for offering and arranging the quiz night in aid of Cowes carnival we really appreciate all their support”.
Newport IW Football Club Chairman David Hayles said:
“We want to help in anyway we can, so holding a quiz night on Friday evening will hopefully raise some vital funds for Cowes Carnival. A lot of preparation is going into getting this all prepared as we’ve only had barely a week to organise it.
“Our team is working hard behind the scenes making sure everything is ready, so we’re encouraging everyone to come along and join in. It doesn’t matter whether you are a business, a family or friends. Come and enter a team on the night, it’ll be good fun and there are prizes to be won which have been kindly donated, the bar will be open and hot food available for everyone.”
Entry costs are £2 per person (up to teams of six). Along with the quiz, there will also be a raffle and lucky dip. Doors open at 19:00.
