After the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, well-rehearsed plans and preparations are being put into action ahead of her funeral that is to be held at Westminster abbey on Monday 19th September.
Her Majesty’s state funeral which will begin at 11:00, will be declared a Bank Holiday as confirmed by King Charles earlier today (Saturday).
The funeral for any reigning monarch in the United Kingdom is organised years in advance, with proceedings overseen by the Duke of Norfolk – a tradition dating back to 1672.
The Queen’s only daughter – Princess Anne – will accompany her mother as her coffin is flown from Edinburgh to London on Tuesday.
She will lie at Buckingham palace until she is taken to Westminster Hall on Wednesday, where Her Majesty’s coffin – draped in the Royal Standard flag – will lie in state at the Palace of Westminster for 4 days between ‘D-Day+6’ and ‘D-Day+1o’, with the coffin lying on a catafalque in the middle of Westminster Hall open to the public 23 hours a day. It will be a closed casket.
On the day of the state funeral, banks and the London Stock Exchange will close with the country entering a day of mourning. It was declared during King Charles’ proclamation that the state funeral will be a national Bank Holiday, with the country set to fall silent.
The service, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, will see not only her fellow Royal Family members present but politicians and world leaders also. Millions of people are expected to line the streets of London.
Following proceedings in Westminster, there will be a committal service in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, with the Queen laid to rest in the castle’s King George VI Memorial Chapel.
Proceedings of the funeral will be broadcast live on multiple TV Channels, but cameras will stop rolling as the Queen’s body enters the final resting place.
