Parents and students at Broadlea Primary School in Lake are being reassured after a pupil was found to have brought a BB gun into the school on Tuesday.
Headteacher Sharon Freeley has written to parents to say that an ‘inappropriate item’ was discovered when a Year 6 pupil brought it into school. That inappropriate item is understood to be a BB gun – something that could easily be mistaken for a real firearm.
The incident is said to have been dealt with ‘swiftly and appropriately’ and parents are being reassured that the school continues to be a safe environment for all pupils.
No one is thought to have been injured, although one parent has suggested that her daughter was injured at the school.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has today confirmed:
“An event occurred on 4th June 2019 involving a child bringing an inappropriate item into Broadlea school.
“Upon discovery of the item, the matter was dealt with swiftly and appropriately in line with the school behaviour policy and advice from the local authority and other outside agencies.
“In order for the school and outside authorities to investigate with proper sensitivity for those concerned, the local authority is unable to provide any further details.”

bring back borstal
Behave mate. They are year 6, around 10 years old IIRC. Probably thought it would be cool to show their mates.
It is illegal to purchase a BB gun unless you are over 18. The child will need to disclose how and where the BB gun was obtained.
Then the adult that purchased the gun or left it lying around for a child to get hold of, should be fined for public endangerment. The substance of the charge would be that the adult allowed a relatively safe weapon to get in the hands of an unsafe user, which means that the weapon is no longer as safe as it was.
The adult should have a prohibition order applied to them, that means that they cannot have a firearms licence or hold firearms, as they cannot be trusted with a BB gun and should be made to pay the costs the police incurred dealing with the incident.
ooh, I see mr (or miss, ms or mrs) judge, jury, and executioner is voicing his draconian opinion again
daemy – clearly you think that irresponsible behaviour by adults when children are around is acceptable. Guess you must be somewhat feral in nature.
No, I just don’t feel it’s necessary for such extreme over-reaction to a relatively minor issue.
it was only a BB gun & whilst they can cause permanent damage if unfortunate, in the majority of cases being shot by one will just end up with a bruise.
if that’s how you react to a kid with a BB gun,.. what would it be like if it was a real live-round firearm he took to school ?
daemy, – have you seen the other report of a girl being hit with a pellet outside the same school. Clearly my response is along the right lines and you should never down play an incident when something like this happens. The kid was clearly showing off and the parents or guardians need punishing for their lack of attention over something as important as this.
It is not a minor issue now is it.
If it had been a weapon that is classified as a gun and not a BB gun, then the licence holder or owner of the weapon should be locked up and deprived of as much as possible so that they suffer accordingly.
These guns can cause loss of sigh6.
Oh don’t be silly, the kid probably thought it would be cool to play with… hardly breaking news… tut tut, what a special snowflake era we are in.
Wouldn’t have been cool if he had shot someone with it
Hardly Breaking news but you still read it. it is local news and if island echo had not reported it some would have moaned, the guy can never win with some of you lot.
How about if he shot your child with it in the eye would that still have been COOL
Bb guns have to be sold in weird and wonderful colours these days and can in no way be mistaken for a real gun.
Incorrect… take a peek at the gun shop in Newport… plenty of real looking BB guns in black. Might be in pretty colours in a supermarket…
a bb gun!!!! snow flakes get a grip!!!
a bb gun!!! get a grip snowflakes
Whether or not some previous commenters like it or not, here are some FACTS:
1. ‘BB’ means ‘ball-bearing’ (originally steel balls intended for mechanical bearings).
2. A BB gun is a weapon.
3. A weapon is DESIGNED to cause harm, possibly death.
4. Therefore, no weapon on earth can be ‘safe’, as some people seem to think.
5. Since it fires ball-bearings or hard plastic pellets, it is classed as a FIREARM.
6. There have been many instances where improper use of these weapons have caused blindness in humans and animals, damage to property (especially smashed windows in houses and cars), etc.
7. Use of these weapons is ILLEGAL in the hands of minors and in public places.
8. Sorry, Brendan, you need to have a look at the VERY real-looking weapons on Amazon and elswhere. Some sold as ‘toys’! A despicable thing to market to children (and immature adults).
So, please try to think about the seriousness of this issue before downplaying it.
“3. A weapon is DESIGNED to cause harm, possibly death.
4. Therefore, no weapon on earth can be ‘safe’, as some people seem to think”
paint-ball guns,… are definately NOT _DESIGNED_ to cause harm, possibly death,.. yes, as with lots of things, if used inappropriately thay can cause harm.
there are guns (of various descriptions ) which are designed specifically for marksmanship. causing only harm to a paper target, again, if used inappropriately thay can cause harm.
“There have been many instances where improper use of these weapons have caused….” yeah but,.. from your comment 3 & 4 that’s what they’re _DESIGNED_ to do & so using something for it’s design purpose is not ‘improper’
daemy – your response to nelson is woeful and perhaps you shouldn’t have bothered.
Sorry,.. I’ll try harder next time
I just have an issue with people claiming things are FACTS when they’re just opinions
It’s called a pellet gun.
By the way Borstal would not be a deterrent for someone this age.
For gods sake you lot, just let it be!
You’re all a bunch of morons with tooooo much time on your hands and clearly no family.
Just let the police or who ever deal with it!
Just grow up ……
