Motorists are really starting to feel the pinch as fuel prices hit £2 a litre here on the Isle of Wight – and the cost is only set to increase as the days and weeks roll on.
For possibly the first time ever, diesel is being sold at 201.5 p/l at the Texaco Garage at Osborne in East Cowes – that’s 10p more expensive than yesterday (Wednesday) when it was priced at 191.5 p/l.
Although the garage is somewhat known for high prices and is therefore an extreme price, it’s representative of rising fuel costs across the board.
Other fuel stations across the Island are likely to see further price rises at the pumps as a result of crude oil hitting $139 a barrel – the highest it has been in 14 years.
In contrast to today’s price in East Cowes, Whitwell Garage – a rural, non-supermarket station – is 41p a litre cheaper on diesel. Tesco Extra in Ryde is selling diesel at 159.9 this morning, meaning on a 50-litre top up there is a staggering £20.50 difference between East Cowes and Ryde.
Simon Williams, RAC fuel spokesman, has warned that more increases at the pumps are expected in the coming days.
He adds:
“The cost of a filling a 55-litre family car with petrol is now £87 – £7 more than it was at the start of the year.
“Diesel drivers are even worse off, with a tank now costing more than £90 for the first time ever – £8 more than in early January.”
The Government could ease the situation by reducing fuel duty and VAT. As it stands, on average around 58p of the price of a litre of fuel is fuel duty, with a further 26p being VAT.

Taking advantage,still £1-55/58 on island
once again drama mongering, try going to Tesco, osborne garage has always gouged its customers.
This happened in my home town many years ago all I can say is when this crisis is over take your business somewhere else we did it and the garage went out of business I know I will not shop there again money grabbers
not sure whats worse – the prices osborne are charging or the state of that roof.
Pure profiteering. Remember the places that ripped you off, don’t go back. Compeition works both ways.
Profiteering will be common place now, even in uncertain times some will always profit from other peoples hardship…..it’s the world we live in..
This country is run by one huge profiteering racket it’s called the government it always has been since thatcher bigest mobters and raketeers going they make the mafia and hitler look like primary school kids and the sad humiliating part is its only now the people of this country are starting to see it but in true British cowardice style they will just moan about it and do nothing at all to change it the British should take a lesson from the Ukrainians on how to deal with oppression and dictatorships cos that’s what you live in people a dictatorship an elective dictatorship democracy hasn’t been practiced in this country for 43 years do you not realise that we pay tax on tax in this waste of space of a country tax on tax seriously we get taxed for paying tax’s you have to pay these tax’s or you will go to prison and then we will tax you for paying those tax’s as well haha look how rich we politicians are you poor gulable saps we have all your money and you just say OK they should change the name of the flag to the union joke great Britain what a crock fuel duty is a tax vat is a tax we pay both for fuel road tax is a tax we pay vat on that tax ergo tax on tax it’s everybody’s god given right to have a roof over their heads but our homes are taxed council tax and theres vat on council tax it might not say so on your bill but it’s there some one dies and leaves you money out of the goodness of there heart and you get taxed on it on a gift you pay income tax on your wages then when you put some away as savings they tax you on that the same money you’ve already paid income tax on taxed twice on the same money you spend it you pay vat your taxed on that money a third time it’s rediculas and the people of this country seem to have forgotten that they have the power democracy means rule of the coman people literally look it up if you don’t believe it if we all said NO NO MORE as one voice one people things would have to change this war in Ukraine is just the latest excuse to bleed us dry a bit more in reality prices don’t need to be as high as they are for any reason other than to make politicians millionaires it’s baffle them with BS as usual and the British people fall for it every damn time.
Easy solution, Don’t use them. How do they justify these prices?
Osborne Garage has always been expensive due to the franchise it operates. You are only scaremongering using them as an example.
Thank you for once again fueling fear and potential panic buying.
Why not do something useful and update the cheapest fuel list
Osborne garage are war profiteering!
Someone else’s misery can always be turned to profit by the unscrupulous.
The price of fuel that this garage is selling it at is not just a total rip off
it is also the first fuel station that people pass after leaving a car ferry
what do you think that this says about the island
and peoples first impressions
THIS IS AN INSULT TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT
Sums it up perfectly imo.
Just a reminder… Fuel Duty is £0.5795/litre plus 20% VAT. So £1.10 for the fuel, £0.965 for the Government.
This is Texaco taking the p*ss. Cashing in on these uncertain times. Disgraceful. Boycott this garage.
Sadly by the end of the month this will be the norm at most fuel outlets but you can guarantee this total rip off garage will be nearer £2.50. I totally agree that the best course of action is to boycott these greedy $&s#?&£s.
This is always an expensive garage for fuel.Cant believe people go there
Stop shopping at any of the central shops on the island vote with your feet
The price of a barrel of oil has fallen today. These reductions need passing on to the motorist instead of ripping us all off!!
Will never happen. Last year the cost of crude fell 40 dollars a barrel and fuel prices never dropped. The supermarkets are operating an illegal cartel to keep prices high and the politicians don’t care. People should also be asking why diesel costs more than unleaded when it is less refined and therefore costs less to produce. Oh yeah I forgot, more vehicles use diesel don’t they…
If you REALLY want to serve island residents; why can’t you publicize the places where fuel is cheapest; instead of creating a perfect storm for panic buying ????
I’m enjoying my cycling even more lol.
Another great piece of journalism from Island Echo NOT.
I still remember back in the 80’s when prices changed from per gallon to per litre. The price doubled overnight because the fuel companies (correctly) realised that most of the public would not be able to multiply the price by four and a half to see what the new cost of a gallon was. Disgusting rip off merchants.
Very likely old stock at stupid greed Prices again , Morrisons Asda and Tesco are much cheaper
on tuesday there was a fuel delivery truck there and diesel was priced at £1.81 or £10 for 5.5 litres £1.40 in £10 dearer than Asda, this is clear profiteering
That is the only garage on the island charging that much, everywhere else is much cheaper.
