Firefighters are working to extinguish a property fire that has spread through a detached dwelling in Ryde this evening (Friday).
2 appliances from Ryde and Newport are on scene at Buckland Gardens, off Spencer Road, where a kitchen fire has quickly developed and is spreading through a chalet bungalow.
Smoke is billowing out of the upper levels of the property.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at 17:19.
UPDATE @ 17:58 – A further 2 pumps from Newport and Shanklin have now arrived at the scene and a water carrier from Ventnor is en-route.
Police have also arrived at the incident and have closed the road.
UPDATE @ 18:15 – Main jets, hose reel jets and COBRA are being utilised to bring the fire under control with Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus committed into the building.
Tools and extension ladders are also being used to remove roof tiles.
UPDATE @ 18:44 – Just over an hour after arriving on scene, the fire is under control with crews having successfully saved the structure of the building.
Firefighters remain inside the property and are working to pull away the ceiling in the 1st floor.
Meanwhile, outside, the Aerial Ladder Platfrom has arrived on scene but is not currently required, thanks to the swift actions of the first crews on scene – led by Tactical Advisor SM Chris Thearle.
Island Echo understands all persons are accounted for with immediate emergency care given to an elderly occupant, who managed to escape the fire.
UPDATE @ 18:50 – SM Chris Thearle has confirmed to Island Echo that the fire is now out, with crews checking over the property to ensure there are no hot spots remaining.
1 elderly female has been treated for the effects of minor smoke inhalation.
Unfortunately, the fire has spread from The kitchen to the 1st floor and the roof space, causing significant damage.
The incident is expected to be scaled back over the next hour.
UPDATE @ 20:33 – It has been confirmed that the fire is thought to have begun as a result of an electrical fault.
