Police will be increasing patrols across the Isle of Wight to target speeding motorists over the next 2 weeks (17th-30th October) as part of a National Police Chiefs Council Speeding Campaign.
Throughout the campaign, officers will be focusing on high-risk routes across the force area, as well as enforcement across the rest of our roads.
The Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police will also be engaging with communities and motorists to raise public awareness of the risks of speeding.
In 2021, there were 1,401 collisions where people were either killed or seriously injured across Hampshire and Thames Valley. Of those collisions 201, around 14%, were recorded as having either excessive speed or travelling too fast for the conditions as contributory factors.
Chief Inspector Chris Spellerberg, of the Roads Policing Unit, said:
“The vast majority of motorists comply with speed limits and drive safely according to the conditions, protecting themselves and other road users.
“However, there are a minority who do not and drive too fast for the conditions, gambling with the lives of themselves and all other motorists.
“Speed is one of the Fatal Four – the main causes of casualties on our roads along with impaired driving, distracted driving and seatbelts.
“Even slightly exceeding the speed limit can have devastating consequences. Every year far too many families are left suffering after deaths and life-changing injuries on our roads.
“Keeping to speed limits and driving to the conditions around you will save lives. This is the responsibility of all road users.
“Speed limits are there to protect the public and that is why we will be actively targeting those who speed on our roads and in our communities.”

Need to come to Ryde in the evening. Seafront to McDonalds/Tescos around the lanes, catch the lot.
They never do though.
Also catch all the people turning right out of mc donalds. Has a massive no right turn sign at the exit yet idiots are too lazy to turn left and go around the roundabout. Instead risk a major accident and turn right.
And the brainless cretins who ignore the no entry signs coming out from hovercraft / car park and cut straight across carriageway instead of going round the roundabout, some of our wonderful “professional” taxi drivers are fond of this short cut.
Why only for two weeks. It’s needed all the time. I thought we were supposed to be getting our Roads Policing Unit back !!!
Police will be increasing patrols across the Isle of Wight to target speeding motorists over the next 2 weeks
..
The public would be more impressed and happy if that statement read…
Police will be increasing street patrols across the Isle of Wight to target anti social behaviour, drunks and other low lives over the next 2 weeks
..
This is a load of bull… The vast majority of motorists comply with speed limits and drive safely .. if this was true, there would not be so many stupid accidents !!
The way I see it, of the 1401 collisions, 86% had nothing to do with driving too fast. Let’s focus more on attending burglaries and assaults please!
About time.
Too many boy racers on this Island.
well, that’s most of the island drivers then.
Quite a few female drivers as well
please sit up top of staplers cos my god they speed all way along ! a certain couple
of regular racing motorbikes come up extremely loud n fast and god knows the speed going towards old lavender farm road but its extreme and a noise nuisance. as are many cars racing up top part of staplers after pan.
dual carriage way is also a priority. most of newport has too hear there racket as they race.
speed limits are broken by huge amount of people sadly and are a danger
Freshwater to Yarmouth is a good race track as well.
Please put Furrlongs on your list, 20mph limit completely ignored by quite a few.
Bridge limits are there for a reason, but what’s the betting the police done nothing about the lorry driver that hit the bridge in Sandown last week causing disruption for road and rail users. What about issuing Bob Seely with a fpn for his breaking of lock down rules? Corruption at its finest
Bembridge has its fair share, few gormless chavs speeding with noisy popping modified cars, usually uneducated prannets then they go towards Culver at a frightening speed, they will eventually crash but let’s hope no normal people are involved.
In our house we call Thursday, Friday and Saturday “Track Night” although most nights are bad. If you stand on the middle of Coppins Bridge it’s like a race circuit. The starting grid appears to be about 50 yards from police station door!
Try driving through Arreton or Rookley at the 30mph limit.
You’ll soon have some “white van man” or SUV right up your backside.
Ooh hello sailor
let’s face it that island must have all the uk’s bad drivers on it. just look how many crashes you lot have on a small island in any one week. has any island driver ever had a driving test
Way too many speeders over here. I was going into Tesco very early Monday morning and this young lad came steaming into the car park and must have been doing 40/50 mph. Drove right down the far end in his Mk6 Ford Fiesta. Either going to McDonalds or he works there.
It was dark and staff were walking across the car park. This idiot could kill someone.
Easy policing sat in a van with a camera. How about some real police work and catching criminals? Nip things in the bud too, how many chavvy personalised plates are mis-spaced? Minor I know, but start with the small things and the perpetrators might think before pushing boundaries to the bigger things. Not rocket science is it?
No police about earlier when an idiot over took me on the way into ryde. I was going 40 in the 40 limit, not fast enough for the black audi estate driver and sod the cars coming down the road in the opposite direction. And as we entered the 30 zone the driver carried on speeding well over 40 in the 30 zone.
Please come to Binstead Hill. It doesn’t have to be in the evening as most cars speed up and down there for 24 hours of the day and night!
You can even use my drive if need be. I would happily fundraise to get a camera put on there full time, for the peace and safety of the community!!
There has been enough crashes and losses of life on that hill already… 🙁
Why don’t they do something when you give them registration numbers and address then and they’re drug driving ? Practically done job for them.
“Blah blah blah” from Hantspol again. ‘Let’s be seen as being pro-active’, but we’ll continue to alocate minimum resources to tackling public disorder and (more importantly to the victims) domestic burglary. Time to stop sending out attempts to reassure the public by regular emails from desk-bound spokespersons and ‘get up the street’ and deal more effectively with the everyday issues which we pay you to police, PLEASE
The main cause of accidents and extremely careless driving is drug driving in Freshwater, military road moa car park. Day and night for at least 3 years oh and Asda is a great racing venue and the roundabout at blackgang chine from bikers tyer marks to prove it.
