A 37-year-old Newport man is being quizzed by Police following an attempted knifepoint robbery on a taxi driver in Sandown last night (Saturday).
Police were called to Station Avenue in the town at 22:08 following reports that an attempted robbery had taken place and that a knife was involved.
It’s said that a male in his 40s – a local taxi driver – was threatened with the bladed article and told to hand over money.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that a 37-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of a Class B drug.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station as officers conduct further enquiries.

I’m sure if a charge was made, the police would release the name but… And please know that I’m not defending anyone other than innocent people here… If the suspicion turned out to be a dead end or false, then said person’s name would have been plastered around like mud, potentially ruining a potentially innocent person’s life.
Names shouldn’t be released to public domain until a formal charge is made.
This kind of thing seems to be coming more and more commen on the island. The only way to stamp it out Is zero tolerance. Anyone pulling out a knife and threatening people with it should be getting an automatic 2 year custodial sentence.

Unfortunately if he hit out at the scumbag, the taxi driver would of had his Licence revoked by the island Licence department…
Another drugged up dead head the law needs to get harder, if your caught carrying a blade or weapon minimum 15yrs in prison that would stop people carrying weapons
