A man who turned up to court armed with a knife has been detained by Police.
It was at around 10:45 this morning (Tuesday) that the 56-year-old male tried to take a Stanley knife into the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court, where he was due to appear for unrelated matters.
He was stopped at the door by security, who discovered the bladed article on his person.
Police were immediately called to the court building on Quay Street in Newport, where they made their arrest.
The man remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.

Lets hope a new government makes carrying a knife a minimum 10 year jail sentence, and using it on someone a 20 year one
I agree totally make the sentence a long time maybe these idiots will think twice about carrying a weapon, what is wrong with these people lock him up and loose the key, he’s 56 years old he should know better the consequences of knife crime? Well done to the security staff.
My neighbour came to my door with a huge kitchen knife. Caught him on my doorbell camera. He was arrested and charged despite denying he had a knife (duh). 18 months I waited for a trial and in the end the CPS dropped it because his barrister was claiming my front door wasn’t a public place. This scum will continue to cause issues in society until the courts follow common sense rather than ridiculous statutes and laws which are completely out of touch with modern life.
What knife crime?
Never thought Id see the day where I can reply nicely to somebodys comment, I completely agree, other than if they use it, 20 years and sectioned!
They mafe itva 5 year term some years
ago. No one enforces it
What the hell are you on about??? “They mafe itva”???
Yes i remember 15/20 years ago fuck all ever happened no one gone in for 5 years.
Will never happen, Governments have lost control of power
in Britain.
No one has ever gone in for the 5 years they came out with 15/20 years ago..utter joke.
What an absolute clown.
Hope, but it won’t happen, the full weight of the law is applied.
There’s a job for you in government.
I carried a work Stsnley knife gor years. I never used it on a person.
Neither did the person in the report.
A little fact nugget for crime and punishment, for the pitchfork brigade.
In the US, where some states have, for example, the death penalty for murder (THE most serious crime, right?) murder rates do not decrease, they often INCREASE…suggesting that a) it’s clearly not a deterrent and b) it suggests serious crime is most likely driven by economic factors. As is drug use. As are (often) mental health issues.
Questions: How many prisons would it take to incarcerate every single offender of varying severity? Who left in an already-poor society would pay the bills to enable the prisons to function?
Anyone bothered to wonder if the bloke was a jobbing builder on a driving charge who just happened to have turned up with a Stanley still in his pocket? After all, the usual suspects know full well a search is conducted at the door….
Fact nugget? Really? Your argument lacks simple logic, critical analysis and demonstrable Truths I fear, Sunshine. And your use of CAPITALS suggests it may be you who likes to carry a pitchfork with the excuse of moral superiority. For a start, I’d like to see the evidence you quote that murder rates increase beyond the average in states which have the death penalty. As to crime and drug use being driven through poverty, again you miss the point. Ordinary, hard working people don’t carry pitchforks. They just want to feel safe and secure and that crime is recognised and punished. Poverty doesn’t make committing crimes against others or taking drugs and committing crimes to feed their habit okay. Deterrence is not the key point here. Most people want Crime to be followed by appropriate Punishment. I would suggest that we are in the woeful state we find ourselves precisely because of naive, unrealistic and woolly minded if well intentioned thinking like yours.
For Overner, comment not yet approved so I couldn’t simply reply.
My facts were taken from the Death Penalty Information Centre, with analysis from FBI Uniform Crime reports. It states ‘Data consistently shows that states that abolish the death penalty tend to have lower murder rates than those that retain it.’ Can’t post links, not allowed on here, so you’ll just look it up for yourself. When I make a statement, there’s always checkable facts. Always.
That’s logic, critical analysis, demonstrable truth with equal fact. For the pitchfork brigade who always scream ‘lock ’em up’ as if it is either a deterrent , solves an ongoing problem or teaches people the error of their ways in society. What it actually does is creates an out-group which breeds further resentment and the desire to get even on a society which bays for their blood. The future impact on their lives from a short prison term exacerbates that division.
Ordinary, hard working people don’t carry pitchforks? Yes they do. It’s called confirmation bias. Again a fact nugget from sociological research: ‘Yes, research suggests that many employed, hardworking people hold implicit or explicit confirmation biases against the unemployed. This is often driven by the “just-world hypothesis”—the belief that people get what they deserve—which leads to the assumption that those without jobs are responsible for their own situation.’ That stems from privileged assumptions. Stable homelife as a child, check. Good enough schooling, check. Enough food, check. Secure relationships growing up, check. Job, check. Home, check. etc etc. Those who never had to get used to surviving a chaotic life not of their making find it easy to join a society as an adult which rewards their hard work and that, like it or not, is privilege which leads to a sense of entitlement.
It’s not moral superiority that drives me to comment, but a wish that if people truly want these problems to go away…given that the traditional methods have been proven to have less effect than desired, people’s mindset needs to change. After all, madness is trying the same approach over and over and expecting a different result.
I know people want to feel secure. I know that fear of potential loss also drives that…’look how hard I’ve had to work to get where I am, I don’t want it taken from me, I don’t want to be impacted by it’, etc. BUT…the justice system we have current is retributive, ie, punishment fits the crime. Doesn’t solve it though. Restorative justice goes some way, passing on some form of compensation to a victim, but never really removes the pain. Not really justice.
So, my points in summary are that a different approach is required based on treating the drivers of crime so fewer victims suffer ultimately. And no, of course poverty doesn’t make drugs and then crime ok, but using drugs as a painkiller in a society which ostracises people based on their cleanliness, their look, their education, their family etc etc is a very slippery slope that few ever escape…and will lead to crime. It’s their painkiller of choice in a world where to them there is little choice. trust me, they’d rather be you. Or me. Just can’t seem to get there. We just got lucky, they didn’t.
Sorry for the rant. x
It looks like none of these people can be “Numpty’s” otherwise good old Enough is Enough would be on one of his boring rants. I must say that it is a really pleasant change to read something intelligent on these pages, well done.
Only numpties carry knives
Look im sorry no one really should be carrying a knife..who in their right mind going to court with a knife? very strange.
when i was a carpet fitter i always had a Stanley knife in my pocket as its was the tools of the trade just coz you have a knife on you dont mean your going to use it for bad things as its not the knife it the person holding it that the problem as anything can be used as weapon from a stick to a screwdriver
More scum no punishment pathetic..
