Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an elderly woman following a fire at her home in Northwood earlier this month.
As previously reported by Island Echo, fire crews were mobilised to Newport Road on 20th June after a fire broke out in the kitchen of a residential property.
The situation was quickly brought under control but 1 person was conveyed to hospital under blue lights. The casualty was stretchered out of the rear of the property.
Fire investigation dogs from the mainland were drafted in the next day but with things not as serious as first thought, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service scaled the investigation back.
Now, Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that the woman – aged in her 80s – died at St Mary’s Hospital on Sunday (26th June).
Police are working with the fire service and the Coroner to establish the wider circumstances around the death.
A spokesperson for the force has told Island Echo:
“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in her 80s on the Isle of Wight, who died at St Mary’s hospital on 26 June this year.
“The woman had been conveyed to hospital on 20 June, following a fire at an address in Newport Road, Northwood.
“The fire is not thought to have been set deliberately at this time”.

I suspect that it will be blamed on Covid.

Sincere condolences to all family and friends…
Such a tragic outcome.
Hants Constabulary fail to find a fire on The Isle of Wight suspicious. This is top news. They didn’t want Mr. Too good getting close to the blaze on Ventnor seafront the other week, did they? (Despite the fact a hundred other people were allowed up close for a while.) He might have spoken to locals who actually saw what happened leading up to it….
