Police are appealing for information after the driver of a van that was involved in a road traffic collision on Newport Road near Apse Heath last night (Friday) fled the scene before officers arrived.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were alerted to reports that a vehicle – a Transit tipper van – had left the road and collided with a wall at around 21:30.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary attended the scene but the driver of the van was no longer present.
The van had caused damage to numerous other vehicles that were parked on the road – the A3056 Newport Road between Apse Heath mini-roundabout and Sandown Airport.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Investigations are ongoing into the exact circumstances of the incident.
“Any witnesses can call 101, quoting the reference 44230128492”
UPDATE ON THURSDAY 6TH APRIL – The driver involved has been reported for summons for driving without due care and attention and failing to report an accident.
They will appear at the Isle of Wight Law Courts in due course.

Let’s give the police a hand, start with the registered keeper and go from there. Then fingerprint the steering wheel, door handles. It’s not rocket science is it. And we’re paying an extra 6.3% for this? More like a circus than a police force
The police here have never heard of forensics. I had a car stolen a while back. It was found abandoned with needles and beer cans inside. No arrests made due to ‘lack of evidence’ lol. They didn’t even check CCTV until I mentioned it and even then they said I could check it if I wanted. I even told them who stole it and they agreed! Laughable.
Our police are woke, lazy, and corrupt, every chav and drug user along with dealers, know it…Good policing died 30 years ago…FACT..
Yeah Jesus! Do they want us to go arrest him too!
Most van drivers are aggressive and drugged up, that’s why some companies digging holes, closed roads and leave it like that for weeks..
Most of them are out of their heads and can’t do a full day’s work, quality of work is a bloody disgrace…
looks like your on drugs
your a complete nob
U still smoke the pot
Most keyboard warriors are out of work and smoke crack to pass their days. But it’s not polite to tar you all with the same brush.
Yeah Jesus! Do they want us to go show them how to put the cuffs on too!
For one thing he probably wasn’t the registered keeper and for another he may well have been wearing gloves, try again miss Marple
Grow up!
What happrns if vehicle unregistered , wearing gloves has no previous convictions.
Answers on postcard please.
So if he/she was over the drink or drugs limit, they would have thought to put a pair of gloves on before they got into the vehicle. Is that what you’re really saying? Think about it, eh?
You fool I told you u can’t park there mate
Wow! Hilarious.
Well thicko who said he /she was drunk or on drugs.
Police want information….why not give the number plate to the readers …that would help
Police don’t do real police work anymore, just easy targets like speeding/ no seat belts etc etc
Finger prints no good if driver has no police record, knowing the drivers name and address isn’t the same as knowing where the driver is
Why not just send Donna Jones around with a costly ‘trained’ wet, pathetic, soft spoken, kindly but totally useless ‘victim support’ person to each victim of the damage, disruption, fuss and cost.
That will appease the victims, and because of prisons are overfilled with the worlds finest imports, there is never again going to be room to give meaningful sentences to our own growing low life.
See what is happening to this once proud nation.
Camp Hill is sitting there empty
If you want a really proud nation, try North Korea
Well it didn’t drive itself did it?
How about Googling DVLA and starting from there?
Lets guess… drunk, or drugged… maybe both… is a goo standing citizen never any traffic violations.. had to get to ( funeral, pregnant partner, a child problem,) or previous night same reasons, was up set so turned to alcohol…
There is NO excuse for Drink or Drug driving.
They should make it automatic 10 YEAR BAN…and fines starting at £1,000… plus costs..
many other countries do… why are the courts so soft here ??
Fingerprints etc, take time to get and find owner.. but might be various people drive the vehicle…maybe they are doing that too.. who knows.. result can take weeks…? Then person may not even be in the database…
He will come forward when he as sobered up. Sorry gov…..
Maybe if we had the same number of police we had ten years ago this would never have happened. When your car is written off by a drunk or drugged driver, make sure you thank the Tories for their work in enabling these people to get behind the wheel.
This is not about party bashing, it’s about idiots showing no responsibility or respect for others…..So stop the communist reterick because the left have created and encouraged along with left wing, woke judge’s, to behave like this…
Rambling, illiterate, incoherent drivel. Thanks for that.
Shut up idiot….your cancelled..
Cancelled. What a load of drivel. Saddo
…your cancelled … WHAT?
Or do you mean “you’re cancelled”?
Oi Peter pot head
– not tonguing Tory behinds and being grateful for the crap on your face
– communist rhetoric
There is quite a gulf between these two things and quite a lot of that middleground is where decent people exist.
anther drunk or drug driver
The problem seems to be is that persons know they can get away with anything
hence not caring.
Take for example parking on pavements
vehicles park 24/7 on pavements and nothing gets done about it.
The Island seems to have poor rules.
The Authorities are clueless.
Peoples cars hit and you talking about people parking on pavements
Cars are hit because idiots park on both sides of the Road,
therefore making the Road only passable for 1 vehicle.
Fine idiots who park on pavements heavily and they should be
issued points on their licence and have to take a re-test.
If there are no council signs up saying no parking or yellow lines, it is not illegal to park on the pavement, that is why
people are not prosecuted
Double Yellow Lines are going to be placed outside the
old Council Houses along Great Preston Road
That will finally stop the T’wats at No.90 parking on pavements.
The Law and Enforcement Officers will have a field day then.
If only the idiots didn’t break the rules in the 1st place
You are correct so not sure why you have been voted down. The only place it is illegal is London.
I suggest that Mr Ashton familiarises himself with sections 242 and 244 of the Highway Code before spouting such misleading nonsense.
Firstly the word “pavements” is incorrect.
Pavements are highways for vehicular traffic. The correct legal term is footways, i.e. areas specifically designed for use by pedestrians.
If you park anywhere in the IK on a footway you can, and should, receive a FPN for obstruction.
Is it me or are the words “people parking on pavements” mentioned in every news articals comments?
Just saying..
It’s probably because no one on the Island cares about
public safety.
Try walking a pram or riding a disabled scooter down
Great Preston Road Ryde
With idiots parked on the pavement it’s impossible to pass safely.
Can see this is going to be a very long, difficult and complex case to resolve. Considering the multitude of identical vehicles on the island (licensed and registered, or otherwise!). At least in this incident the driver, presumably there was one, at one stage, managed to keep the vehicle on its wheels. No upside down photos!
Glad we have you on the case Columbo!
If the van isn’t legally registered in this Muppet’s name, that’s why they don’t know who the driver is, DOH!
Don’t you think they would be straight round his house if this van was legal. Certain people will know who was driving and should do the right thing and give his name to the Police. This moron could have killed someone. Probably high on some shite or fully loaded with alcohol.
I’ve heard that Brayley likes a drink or three!!
If they haven’t got the registration and no car or witnesses how the fxxk can they do fingerprints (der) .
I’ll have a word with my friend Donna and see if we can’t sort this out.
Bob broke the law himself during Lockdown
So not a trustworthy person me thinks.
Maybe the owner will fess up ib the chat?
Well let’s face it British police are only good at harassing bullying and trying to intimidate innocent people minding there own business and generally abusing people because it makes them feel like a man because their wives wear the trousers at home and emasculate them in reality though they are pathetic excuses for human beings and need to remember they are just low level civil servants in our employ and have no power or authority the we the people do not give them like wise this applies to government it’s time to take our power back
As soon as they sober up, they will walk into a police station with tall tales of mental health.
And probably be defended by Mr Arnett, for a quick fine and some points.
That seems to be the norm here…
Fled the scene so the registered keeper (incidently his i.d. was in the vehicle) will deny he was driving (hence running) so will face no prosecution, his insurance wont cover him as the keys were in the vehicle but he wont mind that as he will keep his liscence. All the damage caused will have to be paid for by the victims of this crime, thanks to the selfish moron gettin drunk then driving home.
Does anyone know who took the photo? Was there a cat that had been hit by the truck?
