UPDATED: Multiple emergency crews, including 2 fire engines, are attending a serious road traffic collision on Middle Road this evening (Monday).
Police have closed the main Newport to Freshwater road in both directions as ambulance and fire & rescue colleagues work to free and treat those involved.
The incident – which was reported to 999 operators at around 17:05 – has occurred at the Dodpits Lane crossroads at Chessell and is understood to involve 2 vehicles.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have mobilised crews from Newport and Freshwater with another crew from Ryde making their way towards the scene.
Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 18:11 – A total of 4 fire appliances are now on scene at Chessell where a white Toyota Yaris and a blue Honda Civic have been involved in an apparent T-Bone collision.
3 people have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
The road is expected to remain closed for sometime.
UPDATE @ 18:35 – The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance has landed at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport to airlift 1 of the casualties, thought to be the female driver of the Yaris, to the mainland.
She is understood to have sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and is being rushed to Southampton General Hospital.
Middle Road remains closed and is expected to be subject to a full investigation by the Collision Investigation Unit.
UPDATE @ 19:57 – Officers from the mainland are still en-route to the scene of the crash this evening to conduct a thorough examination and piece together what led to the 2 vehicles crashing.
The road is expected to remain closed for several hours, reinforcing the seriousness of the situation.
UPDATE @ 22:20 – Island Roads have confirmed that Middle Road is to remain closed overnight.
Motorists should continue to avoid the area, diverting via Brook/Mottistone or Yarmouth.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 09:20 – Middle Road remains closed to all traffic this morning, according to Island Roads.
It is thought the extended closure is due to the lack of availability of Collision Investigators from the mainland over the Bank Holiday period. Normally, the specially trained officers are on scene and beginning their forensic investigation within 2 or 3 hours with a road closure lasting between 6-8 hours.
