A pedestrian has been airlifted to the mainland with serious injuries after being hit by a lorry on an industrial estate in Cowes this afternoon (Thursday).
The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA) was scrambled to the North Wight shortly before 14:00 when information was received that a pedestrian – thought to be an older gentleman – had been involved in a road traffic collision on Somerton Industrial Estate.
Having taken off from its Henstridge Airfield base, the yellow helicopter touched down at Booker Wholesale – off Three Gates Road – just 50 metres from the scene of the incident outside Acclaim Logistics.
Flying medics joined paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service in tending to the casualty, before airlifting him directly to Southampton General Hospital’s Major Trauma Centre.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed to Island Echo that officers have responded to a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, which is described as serious.
Officers have been inspecting the Volvo FH lorry, paying particular attention to the front of the cab.
Police remain on scene as investigations continue.
