Police have closed off part of Newport Town Centre this morning (Saturday) amid concerns for public safety as a result of a partial building collapse.
Sections of masonry have fallen from the top storey of a terraced building on Pyle Street, crashing to the ground and leaving debris spread across the pavement and carriageway.
The first section fell at around 10:30, with further sections falling away over the past hour.
It comes as strong winds and driving rain batter the Isle of Wight, with the worst still to come as we move into the afternoon. A yellow weather warning is in force.
It’s understood the Isle of Wight Council’s Building Control team have been informed of the situation.
It is possible that the outside wall of the second floor has suffered from water damage from a blocked gutter. The building appears to be unoccupied with the retail unit on the ground floor – previously Favian – advertised as ‘to let’.
No injuries have been reported.
Police are directing pedestrians and motorists away from the area. Access to Grace’s Bakery is maintained from the East.

Your photo shows 4 police/community officers and 1 vehicle involved, Surely 1 pcso and a roll of tape and a road closed sign would be more cost effective ????
That is true, everyone loves to watch.
Island Road employees are no different
8 men on a work site 1 dos the work, the other
7 are watchers.
All Government run organisations are a picnic
Excellent pay and excellent pension,
majority of the staff are UNACCOUNTABLE!
Wouldn’t happen in the private sector
Old dirty broken newport..no one shops no more ..i wonder why.
They need the old Tuesday Market back,
the real market of years ago, not the couple of
stalls.
Also the Council could help businesses
by offering free parking in the Town.
Sounds like dodgy workmanship, walls don’t
just collapse in the wind.
Check what Cowboys done the original work
