Double yellow lines have been approved at 1 of East Cowes’s busiest estates — although only after an ultimatum about a ‘road to nowhere’.
Parking will now be restricted across 53 areas of the Hawthorn Meadows and along Saunders Way. The Isle of Wight Council has approved the traffic regulation orders (TRO) to increase safety around the narrow streets, ahead of the estate being adopted by the authority.
Speaking at the cabinet meeting last week, Councillor Phil Jordan said to adopt the estate, its roads must meet safety standards and have conducted a safety audit.
Councillor Karl Love, East Cowes representative, said many of the TROs may not have been necessary had the developer not built the housing estate with roads that were too narrow and twisted and with a lack of parking.
He hoped in the future, developers would ensure estates were adequately resourced.
Objections to the proposals were received, saying there were already not enough parking spaces and the restrictions would only cause an inconvenience and knock-on effect. The council has recognised increasing parking restrictions within the estate may result in the displacement of vehicle parking but says they are necessary on the grounds of highway safety. There are no plans, however, for a car park or additional spaces to be built.
The authority said it has kept the restrictions to a minimum, to preserve as much parking as possible but has a duty to ensure road users’ safety which means it sometimes needs to prioritise safety over parking. The yellow lines will only be put in place, the council has agreed, once Saunders Way is completely open.
The road has been in stages of construction since the estate was first built in 2011 but remains unconnected to the official highway. It is broken up into 5 sections and only 3 have been adopted by the council as disputes remain over the last remaining sections.
The council is working with the landowners to resolve the issues but no final date has been set for it to open.

Double yellow lines are so due length of Great Preston Rd Ryde
Come on IW Council send your Highways operative to see how
Dangerous Great Preston Road is!
Don’t hold your breath, IOW Council don’t know what
Yellow paint is!
So, a councillor is complaining that the roads are not fit for purpose and yet the plans must have been approved by the council at some point in the knowledge that the estate would be adopted later. As for future estates, just look around. Same overall design. We have a planning committee that kicks off over everything from changing the colour of your front door to what you can and cannot sell in a shop but they don’t look at the basics. Total waste of space and council tax.
To increase safety bullox you mean to increase revenue from tickets
IOW council agreed plans for the roads and houses in 1st place so are now responsible for providing and compensation to residents who’s home’s may well fall in value, vehicles get vandalised etc. Whole point of planning applications is for Council and it’s officers to ensure all this is considered before approved. Ownership and number of car’s I’m sure has not changed that much . Thought that when planning, each home should have access to one parking area, drive, garage or outside property on road ?.
Huh? Owning a home doesn’t mean council is obliged to forever give you a subsidy of free parking space on public road nearby. And why would it? Choice of your commute is yours.
Parking permits is the best way to tackle parking issues
All part of the plan to price and frustrate all but the well heeled drivers off the road so they have freedom of the highways once more
The WEF plan is to STOP people owning cars
Why not name and shame the developers? Obviously they are playing the it’s your responsibility not ours on joining estate road to main highway…. And knowingly constructed roads which were always going to be to narrow for all the traffic a new estate bring!!! Probably so they could squeeze in another 2 or 3 houses..! Sheer greed from developers and one to many Brown envelopes in Planni gs lap!.
Now please do Pallance Road
The whole Island needs doing
STOP IDIOTS PARKING ON PAVEMENTS
Not to worry though as they don’t have the staff to go around giving out tickets
Fantastic news and about time, people to learn to use their legs more and stop the pathetic over-reliance of a car. Perhaps purchase a house with your own driveway perhaps, simple really! Lol
