Shalfleet Parish Council has successfully identified a parcel of land suitable for new homes to be built, which will be for people of the Parish, those who have a family connection to the Parish or those who work in the Parish.
The Parish Council has been looking for a site for some years and after making an appeal in the local Village News, 1 has now been selected. The site at Crossways, between the junctions of Wellow Top Road and Dodpit Lane, will allow for 8 to 10 dwellings to be built.
A working group has been formed including members of the Parish Council, the landowners, Community Action supported by the Isle of Wight Council, as well as ex-Councillor Stuart Hutchinson and ex-Parish Councillor Alex Burt.
The group has obtained a grant, funded by the Isle of Wight Council through Community Action, which will be used to fund initial surveys for the site and take advice on setting up a Land Trust, which will be separate from the landowner and the Parish Council.

What we need is wind farms in Wellow not more houses. They won’t be for locals, so don’t lie about it.
As local as most Londoner’s are now to the once great Capital.
A wind farm? Really
yes, and don’t use the excuse The wight against wind farms, because we aren’t, it is the wellow against wind farms, Nimbys.
Are they going to include in the surveys, the fact that st marys, the sewage system, the GP’s and dentists can’t cope with more people, as well as the roads.
No sewage system in the immediate area and the field thru want to built is always water logged so good luck with drainage etc. yes good point infrastructure can’t support more building of houses.
Its simple, tere is one main reason why our Infrastructure would not cope, the incessant influx of retirees moving to the island. Due to their age, hey are an ever increasing drain on island resources, they buy up properties so the only option for the youngsters of the Islais to move away, they then either get themselves elected to whatever body they can or constantly jump on social media to do everything possible to stop any progress. They do everything they can to try and blame other reasons for not building homes but reality is they are the most selfish type of NIMBY you will ever find, THEY WILL KILL TH8S ISLAND IF NOT CHECKED, just looked at the decline in the islands fortunes since we became a giant retirement home, God’s waiting room
Green land presumably !!
Why the hell are Parish Councillors ‘identifying’ new sites for yet even more building?
The island cannot cope. Do these people not understand the predicament poor St Mary’s Hospital is in? Our one and only hospital is on its knees trying to care and treat island residents but the social care services just are not here so bed blocking is a real problem.
So what do the councillors suggest, LETS BUILD MORE HOUSES. Unbelievable!
Quite agree sunshine . This island will sink because of attitude like these . But please not bad blockers, waiting placement sounds so much kinder and humane. Heaven forbid that one day that may be me , worked hard all my life to eventually to be called a bed blocker. So humiliating. I work in healthcare and I totally hate that expression.
Oops sorry Christina! It is such a shame that adult social care is in such a mess. Perhaps the ‘red’ party will sort out the mess the ‘blue’ party have caused these past 12 years!
We all know what we have to do come the next General Election.
They most likely pay for private care. And obviously don’t give a f about the sewage going into the sea
Your spot on right there Mrs Jollop…….
No NHS for them. Off over to the Spire in Southampton I bet.
Councillors UNDERSTAND, they just don’t CARE, for they, their loved ones and friends are treated privately for dental and health issues, and all their children can attend Private schooling, so they could not care less about the rest of us.
They are not stupid, and don’t ‘realise’, they just are greedy, knowing the more houses built the larger the pot to take higher salaries, higher pensions and more of their ilk to employ from the enlarged pot of cash.
When the Island is fully ruined and they have not where nice to live, they will leave it and live in some other lovely area, so are selfish nasty people.
“When the Island is fully ruined and they have not where nice to live, they will leave it and live in some other lovely area, so are selfish nasty people”. ITS SAD BUT TRUE.
When they sell the houses r they going to put locals only,I doubt if they can,how about thinking of a tourism attraction, after all it is a tourism island,be quick though Aldi will get in there for planning
Only for those of the parish or work with the parish !! What becoming a select little community for yourselves in case riff raff get in. Load of snobs . Who’d want to live by you do gooders anyway . I thought that kind of mentality went out in the middle ages . Enjoy your little cosy corner away from us commoners.
I’m sure Shalfleet Parish Council Chairman Steve Cowley would be more than eager to explain to local landowners ‘How to Bring Housing Estates into the Wider Rural Area’.
He’s got his own little planning venture on his land … another old brown envelope buffer (like the rest of the cronies forming the ‘committee’) should have retired years ago.
They’re all friends with sausage boy too…
Despite all this noise emanating from SPC Council, the Chairman’s ‘planning venture’ has no ‘affordable housing’ allocated for the local poor and weedy.
Odd that innit?
So who is the landowner? Is it for sale, compulsory purchase? To be leased with ground rent?
Several questions, why are a parish council with no power getting involved in trying to build more houses that we do not need ,why are two ex councillors involved unless they have happen to have an interest in such construction., the land is totally unsuitable for housing, more to the point the land holds water , where is that going to go when you concrete it over.,Shalfleet parish stick to doing what you do best, being a idle talking shop and running coffee mornings.
And where are these new home habitants going to work and shop? More car journeys if they can afford to run a car because the bus service is not frequent, more pollution coming. More rural isolation and loneliness if they are elderly. Build where younger people need homes in towns where there’s opportunities to work.
