Roads Policing officers have been conducting a proactive enforcement operation on the Isle of Wight again this week, targeting motorists for all sorts of offences.
Officers from the mainland-based Roads Policing Unit crossed the Solent on Wednesday and Thursday to support local officers in conducting the 2-day crackdown. It’s part of Operation Wightwash which is run at regular intervals throughout the year in a bid to intercept drivers committing offences on the Island’s roads.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that there was a reduction in the number of offending drivers identified compared to previous months, with the weather conditions playing a part in this, however, officers still intercepted a number of drivers breaking the law, including a drug driver.
More than 50 drivers were dealt with for a range of offences including people using their mobile phone behind the wheel, driving without a seatbelt, contravening a red light, driving with insecure loads, driving without insurance, having a defective vehicle and driving with illegal number plates.
1 motorist was arrested for driving under the influence of cannabis, and another was dealt with for driving whilst disqualified.
16 motorists were ticketed for having excessively tinted windows or visors, with 1 particular vehicle having window tints which only allowed in 15% of light. The minimum level of light transmission through a front passenger or driver’s side window should be in excess of 70%, meaning this driver’s visibility was significantly reduced.
A spokesperson for the Force has said:
“Our activity has a particular focus on stopping drivers who display the ‘fatal four’ behaviours – these are the four poor driving habits that pose the greatest risk of leading to a serious or fatal collision, and include drink/drug driving, driving without a seatbelt, speeding, and mobile phone use whilst driving.
“We encourage members of the public to report driving offences, and concerns around driving standards, to police so we can identify any hotspots and take action to keep road users safer.
“To make a report to police, call 101, or submit information via the report tool on the Hampshire Constabulary website. Always dial 999 in the event of an emergency.
“If you have video footage of a road incident that you would like to submit to us, you can do this using the Hants Snap tool on our website: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/hants-snap/hantsnap/hants-snap—report-an-incident/.”

It’s about time the police cracked down on the posers with their modified illegal number plates.
I thought all Island cars had modified plates, plod could start with the 4 along my road
Islandwide ANPR will catch these Numpty’s
£100 fine and 3 points will stop the B’stards
No, let them keep them.
Gives us something to point and laugh at. Particularly the saddos with their plates re-arranged to read IW or IOW.
Why stop at number plates, why not pull them over because the they don’t like the colour of the car.
One issue is other drivers flash all oncoming cars so everyone knows that a speed trap is awaiting.
Wish the police would leave a hidden speed detector in the same road even if just for comparison sake, THEN I wager the results would be very different.
if you caught warning other drivers by flashing your headlights firstly its an offence to flash lights inappropriately.
Secondly you can get prosecuted for obstructing the Police.
No need to flash it can be posted on twitter, and other social media platforms as does descriptions of the undercover cars… “flashing is so 90’s”!
I agree,(not) then whilst driving one can pull out their mobile phone and read the text, then forward to others… Maybe you are the IDIOTS I often see on mobile phones, speeding down the road…
So you approve of people using mobile phones while driving?
Speed Cameras islandwide will solve that trick.
The Island needs Sadiq Khan in charge,
he will fine thousands of people on a daily basis
He dont take no sh@T
Are you stupid? Have you seen what that nasty idiot is doing to London!!
I think he’s being sarcastic….
I hope he is, the last thing we want is khan having any influence over here, he is an evil man.
Don’t be ridiculous, Tony T. Sadiq Khan is only doing what everyone will be living by soon, forced to by climate change.
The island has enough problems without sadiq khan,
People with cameras should give the evidence to the police
I did. Took an hour of my time to upload the video of some moron overtaking and almost having a head-on crash and filling in the forms.
Got an email saying my report had been received, then nothing.
Not even a “no further action will be taken”.
In future my dashcam footage will be going to those “driving like a smeghead” YouTube channels.
I always flash oncoming vehicles as long as they’re not Dacias cause any one who’s bought one of those awful cars needs banning!! Also appreciate people warning me..
Well done far too many motorists on the Island are breaking the Law.
Fine them and give them Points for their crimes.
Like the police give a flying if the public bother to spend 45mins on hold even trying to report something.
My neighbour without car tax for 6months and I know they were being reported but nothing. Why would anyone bother wasting their time?
That is true.
My Father reported a vehicle that was being used on a regular basis with
NO MOT for 8 months
It was reported to IW Council, Island Roads, the Useless District Steward for Ryde and
DVLA
Nothing was done about it.
All Government run organisations employee useless overpaid employees who only care
about their pay day.
Yes the island is like a giant car park most have no tax yet nothing is done it’s not fair to all the people that pay for there tax mot etc
How does one know if a car has no MOT or Tax? Neither certificate has to be displayed.
Check on Gov Website
Car Tax checker or Gov.uk Check Mot
use your favorite search engine, type in TAX MY CAR.. it will open a Gov website, where you can choose, is my car taxed.. if you know the offending vehicles number plate, type it in.. and check model colour, then next… it will display if taxed and Mot’d
Gov website
You can download an app from the Google Playstore, install it on your phone. All you do then is enter the cars registration number and it will give you info about MOT and Tax. Nothing about insurance.
Police don’t deal with car tax evasion and there’s at least one of them parked in every road ! Nothing is ever done
I would fine all Companies who break the law by pulling
Trailers along with a different Number plate on than the vehicle
pulling it.
I have even seen Island Roads doing this.
they need to do that every day how many driving on the island with no tax. no mot. no ins if they go over to the other side of the island they will also get drink driving. you never see a police car over that side
The Island is so laid back you dont need a sun lounger
How about running red lights and stopping in box junctions.
they only need to catch a few to send the message.
Also parking on Pavements, Zig Zags and Double Yellow Lines
Common as fcuk on the island.
It is about time IW Council opened up a compound and employed
Tow truck drivers to tow such vehicles to the compound.
£250.00 minimum to get ones vehicle back
The stupid selfish B’stards won’t break the rules again.
Come on Mr Jordan what a money maker this would be for the
Island.
Moneymaker to add more to the councils pockets more like
I agree. Some idiots over here do exactly as they want. They also move road closed signs and bollards and go through badly flooded roads……..Morton Common to name but one! Unbelievable. There’s some bloke on Facebook asking for people to look out for his number plate. Obviously down there driving through at speed no doubt in his Landover Discovery!
Two days running I was honked for stopping at a red light. And also honkedfor declining to enter a yellow box area. Both at Pelhurst road.
Most of the time, island Police officers do nothing to catch motorists breaking the law for whatever reason. Only when the Roads Policing Unit from the mainland come over and carry out a big operation do many get caught. So many idiots run red lights over here. They keep going through on Amber and make no
attempt to stop!
Need to do a weekend when all the idiots are out and about.
Great idea.
Someone should walk around Tesco or McDonalds Ryde car parks checking
Car Registration plates.
That is where most of the Numpty’s hang out.
Install Anpr at the entrance of McDonalds and Tesco
It would make Millions of Pounds and catch all the Numpty’s
It happens! I watched a car get towed in Tescos a week ago. 🙂
You lot getting your knickers in a twist over a few dodgy number plates while thousands of children are dying in Gaza in a war that could escalate into WW3. You’re all lucky to live where you do.
As Winston Churchill once said
Old men start wars, young men fight them
So ‘equality’ hasn’t reached battle fields yet then? No woman fighting? Also IF anyone lived in a horrid environment why have children? Surely so selfish if your life is so awful to inflict that onto others.
Here they do so as get hundreds a week, free rent and c.tax for burdening society with another kept clone but can’t understand doing so in such awful places.
Perhaps no contraception for free, but would YOU bring a child into such conditions?
ohh it is sooo sad that these days we can find out whats happening in other parts of the world… I wonder what they think when they look at TV or read a paper and see what YOU are doing… asshole..
The non Caucasian people seem to always have been and still are a thorn in the side of world peace prosperity and progress.
Seems always a hard luck story which the West has to feed, treat, take in or risk our lives fighting a war for people who are portrayed as innocent, yet wherever they settle enmasse in any country the same happens of crime, violence, overpopulation and misery for those stupid enough to accept them
Certainly we have had wars but the hatred is not continuing for millennia
Let them get on with it imo
Children are dying all over the world, every day. This country has its own problems that need solving including child poverty. If you have to bang on about Gaza on a post about motor crime on the isle of wight may i suggest you get on a plane to Gaza and go and do all you can to help.
Happy holidays.
Ironic the picture is near Mc Donalds, abotu 50% of their cutosmers ignore the no right turn sign and turn right because they are too fat and lazy to turn left and go around the roundabout 100 yards up the road.
I would imagine lack of education is to blame, if they had
Brains they would eat healthier food.
I’m old enough to remember as a child when noone wore seat belts. It was perfectly normal at the time, but how anyone can do it with what we know now and current road conditions, completely beggars belief.
