The local community rallied around and raised over £1,000 for Freshwater Independent Lifeboat on Saturday – despite uninviting weather and the lure of the TV as England played in the Rugby World Cup.
The volunteer team arrived at the Co-Op in Afton Road, Freshwater on Saturday morning with a little apprehension on how successful the fundraising day would be. However, as the event continued, more and more people arrived and the donations soon mounted up.
With the unique Surf Rescue watercraft on show, it was the perfect photo opportunity for the families that visited the crew and fundraisers.
The team have jointly agreed that the local community outshone themselves with their support and generosity on the day, with a total of £1,065 raised.
Sallie Ryan, crew member said:
“It was great to talk to the locals, and we’ve also had a few people interested in joining the lifeboat crew!”
Principal Fundraiser Rod Adams said:
“The fantastic response we get from the local community at these fundraising events never ceases to amaze me, especially when the weather and live World Cup rugby were against us! We made a lot of new friends and hopefully some new prospective crew and volunteers”.
