Nearly 20 objections have been made against a street trader looking to operate on Gurnard seafront. Carly Sykes, of The Salty Siren, is looking to open a concession along Princes Esplanade in Gurnard, selling ice cream, lollies, drinks, slushies, buckets and spades as well as other items. Isle of Wight Council officers have recommended the application be approved at its licensing sub-committee meeting next Tuesday 12th March. The council has said some objections made to the application cannot be considered as part of the determination as they have referenced competition and the issue of need. Princes Esplanade is also the home of Plaza Ices. Under the authority’s street trading policy ‘need’ and ‘competition’ are not criteria that an application can be determined by. Other concerns raised by nearby residents include the potential fumes, noise and vibrations which come from the generator used to run the catering trailer as well as an increase in littering. The council has been satisfied with the information provided by the applicant and none of the other statutory consultees have raised objections. As concerns from the public still remain the application will be decided by the licensing sub-committee. Island Roads, as the landowner, has granted permission for The Salty Siren to trade there but a street trader permit is still needed from the council. If the application is approved, the consent would be for one year from 20th May and the concession would be open from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday, and 10:00 to 16:00 on Sunday.

Some people just don’t like change and will moan about everything
But having access to another cafe will lower our property prices!
What a great idea! Let’s have it! Do like a slushie in the summer!
Hopefully all goes ahead as it is such a good idea to have more along these places that need some choices for people.
Pretty sure they would of wanted to stay open longer for the summer months but not able.
Good luck !!
Would 20 people really be bothered about this? Nope, but some toffee nosed ponse has obviously rounded up 19 of his mates to write letters of concern… I hope the fella gets permission.
What harm will it do, as long as it’s not selling stuff till late at night? It will attract more people as there aren’t lots of places to get the stuff they want to sell? Stop being party poopers, not like it’s a night club????
What’s to object too ?. Might bring few more people down seafront.
I didn’t realize that Island roads were the LAND OWNERS,as stated above, if that’s the case why do we pay them, to look after their own property.
You’re right. I think this needs further explanation.
What land do Island Roads own? Is it just roads, which seems an odd thing to own as they’re paid to repair them, or whole tracts of land?
Not in my back yard.
It’s someone trying to earn some money ,where is the problem ,if you don’t like go to Benidorm that’s where ex metropolitan police retire isn’t it
If it okay for Plaza Ices to be along the Esplanade so it sets a precedent.
Healthy competition never hurts any business.
Makes more a reason to go there.
I would like to see the Local Authorities supporting small businesses for a change.
