There are currently no confirmed plans to build a multi-storey car park at St Mary’s Hospital, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust has said, despite the idea first being touted almost 18 months ago.
Back in November 2023, the Trust set out 3 options to increase parking capacity at the site — a decked car park being one of them.
The other 2 options involved replacing all existing equipment relating to car parking, including pay machines and barriers, while the second was the create an extra 50 parking spaces adjacent to the main visitor car park.
Although it remains an option for the future, the Trust has said:
“We currently have no confirmed plans to build a multi-storey car park”.
However, the Trust says it is planning to deliver ‘a number of improvements’ later this Spring, including new signage and car parking payment equipment. It follows long-running complaints about the Island hospital’s car parking facilities.
Reported problems with St Mary’s car park ticket machines were among the key issues highlighted by Healthwatch Isle of Wight in its latest January to February Intelligence Report.
One user told the watchdog:
“I would like to raise serious concerns regarding the current hospital parking system, as it is not fit for purpose and poses significant challenges for the community.”
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said:
“We regularly assess car parking capacity at the St Mary’s Hospital site, this includes evaluating the need for additional car parking.
“As part of our forward planning we will continue to explore several initiatives to improve the experience for people parking at St Mary’s.
“Later this spring we look forward to bringing in a number of improvements including new signage and the installation of new car parking payment equipment that will be more user friendly and reliable.”
Easiest option is to tarmac over the grassed areas,
therefore creating more parking spaces.
So get rid of the green areas, god you really don’t have much thought processing going on do you. Multi storey would actually work quite well at the rear of the hospital, but if not planning to do that then just like trying to get the managers to do some real work in the hospital, ain’t gonna happen.
What’s the point of having unnesseccary grass areas
in car park areas.
When families visit poorly loved ones, they are in a rush
to park, not have a picnic on the grass.
What is more important!, don’t be a Numpty all your life!
Get on with the multi storey and stop faffing about, no doubt any consulting and assessing will have a cost which could have been used in the build. I have assessed the parking and will not put in a bill for my time. My assessment is that it needs a multi story car park, decision made.
They could demolish Camp Hill prison and create an additional
car park for St Mary’s.
That way kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Lack of brains seems to be the problem on the island.
