The driver of a van that jumped a red light and crashed into a taxi in Sandown yesterday evening was not under the influence of drink or drugs, according to Police.
Officers rushed to The Broadway at around 18:30 as a result of a 2-vehicle collision between a white Ford Transit Connect and a Ford Transit taxi.
Passing members of the public feared the van driver was under the influence and took his keys away. However, Police say reports of the driver was driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol were unfounded after roadsides tests were negative. As a result, no arrests were made.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We can confirm that we were called out to an incident at 6.24pm yesterday evening (1 October) to reports of a two-vehicle collision at the junction of Lake Hill and Broadway. A Ford Transit had collided with a taxi but no damage was recorded and no one suffered any injuries”.

is it not against the law to jimp a red light ?
All it says is they were not arrested. Jumping a red light is not an arrestable offence.
Why not fined for jumping lights as Tracie said ?
Complete farce!
Not an arrestable offence.
Suspected of jumping a red light….its a motoring offence I expect witness statements will have to be taken etc..then he will be given the opportunity to plead guilty by letter .not w en appear in court
as a pedestrian i am well aware of the amount of people who ignore red lightsHe was under the influence for definite we were behind him from Brading he went up so many kerbs and had many near misses with other vehicles. He was very dangerous. Certain drugs only stay in your system for so long and it took the police 2 hours to get to the accident. The guy was arrested and known to the police the taxi was damaged and is in the garage.
Wait was excuse colour blind
Yep, as Timbo states, not an arrestable offence running a red light. If proven the offender will get a FPN of up to £100 and probably 3-points. Not sure if the consequences are higher if they have previous.
Driving without due care and attention is an offence.
Copied and pasted from a traffic lawyers site. By far the most common traffic signal offence is running a red light (even if you thought you went through an amber light), with most offences these days being caught on a traffic camera located at the junction. A driver is just as likely to be stopped by the police at the time of the offence. Either way the offence is usually dealt with by a Fixed Penalty of 3 points and a fine of £100.
Traffic light offences are dealt with under Section 36(1) Road Traffic Act 1988 and running a red light or failing to comply with any road markings at the lights is an offence.
Probably on their phone lol
At last ONE person just driving badly.
Usually the snowflakes assume everyone is a medical timebomb or driving vehicles which have defective brakes, steering or blown out tyres.
Perhaps this sole guilty driver should have a bronze statue made as the only guilty accident perpetrator on Wight, despite several mishaps occurring daily here now.
Nice to see that this vindicates those jumping lights as not a crime, UNLESS you cripple or kill an innocent victim.
Great message to encourage more reckless driving
The maximum penalty for red light jumping is a £1,000 fine and six penalty points endorsed on the driver’s licence however, in most cases, a driver will get a Fixed Penalty Notice (On-the-Spot Fine) of £30[1] whilst the maximum would only ever be imposed if the Fixed Penalty Notice is contested and taken to court.
Another skilled driver ! Too many vehicles run red lights, they do not understand amber light after Green, means prepare to stop, Not accelerate..
There will be many more at St Mary’s when the roundabout is replaced by TLs at two adjacent junctions in a forty limit!
