Staff at the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service will have better welfare facilities when a new support building opens at the Dodnor Lane ambulance station, which is also being given a refresh.
The ambulance station located to the rear of St Mary’s Hospital in Newport is currently being upgraded with a new, link-detached building being built. This will provide a new break room, welfare area, training and simulation rooms and office space, greatly improving the facilities for both frontline and back office staff.
It is to be connected to the main ambulance station via a link bridge.
The main station is to be re-clad to remove asbestos material and improve the overall look of the station, which will see an emblem on display and a flag pole erected – displaying with pride the work of the emergency service.
The upgrade allows for improved facilities to meet the increasing demands being put on the service and aids the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to meet its national service obligations and improve on efficiencies. Recruitment and retention of paramedics has been an issue historically.
Due to the size of the Island, there is just 1 ambulance station which means all aspects of the operation are under a single roof – unlike the mainland where staff will be based out of make ready centres.
Work on the building is nearing completion but it is unknown when it will be officially unveiled.
