Plans have been submitted to create a new 8-bed ward at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, aimed at improving post-surgical recovery facilities.
A full planning application has been lodged by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to demolish the existing modular administration offices currently serving Mottistone Ward and replace them with a purpose-built single-storey extension comprising 8 en-suite patient bedrooms.
The development will be located to the north of the hospital site, making use of previously developed land rather than expanding into green space. It will be directly connected to the existing corridor that links Mottistone Ward with the North Hospital.
The new ward is intended to support surgery recovery and includes support spaces such as a nurse base, utility rooms, plant areas, and storage. Although single-storey, the flat-roofed building will feature a rooftop plant enclosure, giving the appearance of a two-storey structure in part.
Access around the extension will be improved with level and ramped approaches, and minor alterations are planned to the rear hospital access road, which will retain sufficient width for cars and ambulances. No car parking spaces will be lost as a result of the development.
The modular building currently on the site will be relocated elsewhere within the hospital grounds and repurposed.
The planning application is now under consideration by the Isle of Wight Council with a decision set to be made in October.

Any news on how the new NHS Hub on Newport High Street is doing? It never seems to have any movement about it when I walk past. Is it open to patients? Even the cafe is deserted most of the time.
All I know is that someone I know has got an eighteen month wait to see someone!
Any improvements eg extra beds for any hospital
shouldn’t require planning, should be a priority.
And have they got the staff since Portsmouth hospital has got a hold?
