A Brading woman who was stopped by Police after she was seen driving with a rear brake light out on a car she had only just bought was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
Chloe Coombs, 30, of Station Road in Brading, admitted drink driving when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (13th January).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that at 03:52 on 29th December, officers on mobile patrol noticed Coombs’ car – a Ford Ka – had a rear offside brake light out as she passed them on Marlborough Road in Ryde.
Officers followed Coombs and noted she was travelling at 20mph in a 40mph zone. She was subsequently stopped on Beaper Shute.
A roadside breath test was conducted which returned a positive result for alcohol. The 30-year-old was arrested and taken to Newport Police Station where evidential tests were carried out, the lowest of which read 88 – the legal limit is 35.
Defending, Henry Farley said that his client had never been in any sort of trouble and that she was mortified and filled with remorse and shame. He added that Coombs had only purchased the car on that day and that she hadn’t realised that the brake light was out.
Magistrates handed Coombs – a mother of 1 – a 22-month driving ban. She was also ordered to pay a fine of £150, costs of £85 and a £66 surcharge fee.

What’s a young mum doing out drunk and driving at 3am on a Thursday morning? , Might be more to this story.
This sort are not ‘Mothers’ but women who have fallen pregnant and had children.
A huge difference IF you have been lucky enough to have had a ‘real’ Mother.
Just a means to an easy lifestyle for many now having a kid or more.
While it’s completely idiotic to be driving while under the influence, it’s not illegal for a mum to have a drink on a weekday…..
Not saying was illegal, but it wasn’t a celebration night like New Year so possible has an alcohol problem,it would be illegal however if responsible for a young child and over limit, that’s when many a child stuffers neglect or can die in house fire etc. If this was my daughter I would be very concerned for her wellbeing etc. If hadn’t been caught she may well of killed herself in accident and her child without a mother !
Also what has her drinking on a Thursday night got anything to do with her being a mum? The two are nothing to do with each other …
Only remorseful because she got caught !!!!!
Thank god the brake light wasn’t working !!!!!!
Could have caused a serious accident…..
What part of Don’t Drink and Drive to people not understand ??????
YAWN……..Not everybody can be as perfectly perfect as you mary poppins.
You old spinster imo…lol.
Careful Ting Tong. You don’t want to go hurting people’s feelings.
Didn’t realise her brake light was out…..errrr…..did she also not realise she was tanked up on alcohol? So the moral of the tail is if you’re planning on drink driving check your brake lights first, or don’t buy a car at all.
Why have a defense? There is no excuse for DinC.
Really surprised she has not been caught before
