The team at the Island Riding Centre are mourning the loss of the much-loved pony ‘GG’, who was tragically killed after being struck by lightning during yesterday’s stormy downpours.
Diners at GG’s Bar and Restaurant have been thanked for their support after witnessing the freak accident, described as a ‘one-in-a-million lightning strike’.
The Newport area was hit particularly hard by torrential downpours late on Sunday morning, which included dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes – one of which hit GG.
Despite the best and immediate efforts of staff at the Island Riding Centre, they were unable to save her.
A spokesperson for the popular Staplers Road attraction has said:
“We are devastated to announce the loss of GG today.
“One of our most popular ponies she was tragically hit by a one in a million direct lightning strike this morning in the sudden storm.
“Thank you for the support of all of the restaurant diners who sadly witnessed the tragedy happen and the riding centre staff who despite their immediate response were unable to save her.
“She will be terribly missed by us all”.
