Mountbatten Isle of Wight is inviting local people to take part in ‘Remembering with Ribbons’ – a touching way to honour loved ones who have died while supporting the hospice’s vital work.
Between Thursday (4th July) and Saturday 31st August, Mountbatten’s award-winning Chelsea Garden in Halberry Lane, Newport will be transformed with vibrant yellow and orange ribbons. Each ribbon symbolises a cherished memory and tribute to someone special.
There are several ways to take part. Supporters can donate online and visit the Chelsea Garden to tie a ribbon in their own time, or attend a special celebration event on Sunday 20th July from 10:00-12:00. The gathering will include music, readings and refreshments. For those unable to visit, Mountbatten’s team can tie a ribbon on their behalf.
Debs Goodenough, who is remembering her husband Simon, has shared her experience of the scheme. She has said:
“Tying a ribbon in Mountbatten’s garden is a way to remember Simon, to say his name, and feel connected to others who are also remembering someone they love.
“When Simon was dying, Mountbatten surrounded us with love and care. We were able to create lasting memories, and I could be his wife again, not just his carer.”
Mountbatten Isle of Wight provides 24/7 end-of-life care to people across the Isle of Wight, including in people’s homes, at St Mary’s Hospital and in the hospice’s inpatient unit in Newport. It costs £10.5 million each year to run the hospice, with only a third coming from the NHS – the rest must be raised through community support.
Each ribbon helps Mountbatten continue its mission to care for Island families in need. To donate and dedicate a ribbon, visit www.mountbatten.org.uk/ribbons or call 01983 217300.
