A 64-year-old motorcyclist has tragically died following a fatal collision with a van on the main road between Newport and Yarmouth on the outskirts of Shalfleet.
Emergency services were called to Yarmouth Road – near the junction with Underwood Lane – at just before 18:45 yesterday evening (Saturday).
Medics from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were scrambled to the scene, alongside colleagues from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, but there was nothing that could be done to save the rider’s life. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
It’s understood the motorcycle – a Yahama XVS – was travelling towards Newport when the collision occurred. The Ford Transit van was heading in the opposite direction.
The road was closed for several hours as officers from the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit worked to forensically examine the crash site.
The road re-opened shortly after midnight.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Sergeant Jamie Barron has said:
“We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone who may have seen the vehicles in the area prior to the collision to contact us.
“Were you in the area at the time? Did you see the either vehicle in the run up to the collision or maybe you have dash-cam footage?
“Anyone with information is urged to contact us on 101 quoting Operation Elucidate or 44220201520. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers online or by calling anonymously on 0800 555 111”.
RIP fella. Thoughts.
Thoughts go out to the motorcyclist family at this tragic time. I really hope the Police can establish the details. All I know, there are way too many cars and vans speeding around this island. Something has got to be done to stop motorists driving like lunatics.
Who is to say who was going to fast. Tragic yes, expected yes. So don’t just blame cars and vans.
Two likely causes – either the van/motorcycle crossed the centre line when going round the bend (like many motorists who seem incapable of steering their vehicle), or the van/motorcycle attempted a poor overtake on a bend. I’m sure the Police will establish the facts. A sad reminder to us all to be more careful on the road.
And motorcyclists don’t speed??
Speed does not kill, complacency does!
Very sad outcome. RIP XX
So sorry to his family and friends. Rip sir
My guess is someone was over the white line… !!
My guess is that you are a thoughtless prick.
My heart goes out to his family & friends!! Also to whoever was driving the van, People just going about their day to day stuff and then something like this happens. Totally feel for all involved in this tragic accident. We should thank our emergency services too.
As the Daughter of someone who died in a freak accident at sea, I would never speculate on causes. My Father’s body was missing for three weeks and someone who didn’t know him actually suggested to me that at 80 years old he had met a millionairess afloat and was now living on a desert island. An extreme example , but nonsensical and very disrespectful. Let’s all drive to the best of our abilities and allow accident investigators and the Coroner to know best. So sorry for all those affected.
I’ve taken an advanced drivers course and test several years ago. All I can say is that it is worth its weight in gold, as it has prevented many incidents from developing by creating a far smoother, more aware, and safer drive. Anyway, it’s such a good feeling when you help prevent an accident!
I’m going for the Masters driving course soon!
Wow .You are amazing. You are obviously extremely proud of yourself.
That is the usual sort of reaction that is expected when very good sound advice is shared by someone.
the IAM & similar training & tests are a good idea, but even those skills don’t make someone indestructible.
knew the biker boy ,VERY SAD FOR EVERYONE
So what happened then
I too ride, but I haven’t heard who this person may be, it’s always a tragedy when someone loses their life, my condolences to you at the loss of your friend, and also to his family.
Yes so very sad. It was 64 year old man, May he rest in peace
Do not know ,but a person died
Victor, It said 64 year old man, not a boy? Prayers and love to all who knew him. RIP
I knew the deceased biker very well. He was a very competent rider. We toured most of England, Scotland and Europe together over the past 20 years. He was one of my best friends and I know his wife and family well. He lived on the island with his wife in Shanklin.
He was returning from a bike tour around the New Forest area and used the ferry into Yarmouth. He leaves a wife, son, daughter, step daughter and a lot of good friends. I and his family would appreciate it if all comments were posted on here with due compassion and consideration.
RIP my good friend.
So deeply sorry for your sad loss Martin. I send love prayers and sincere condolences to you and the family. May he rest in peace, God Bless
