The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge and Alverstone on the Eastern Yar as more than half a month’s rain has fallen in the past 2 days alone.
In Sandown, Morton Common Road between Brading and Sandown has been closed this morning (Monday) as a result of the carriageway flooding – unsurprising given its position across the River Yar.
Officials are warning that the track to Horringford will be flooded and Golf Links Road, cycle tracks and footpaths across the Upper Yar Valley will be impassable today.
Property flooding is possible in the area, especially at Alverstone and Langbridge, but as the morning goes on the river level will start to slowly fall.
It’s said that 50mm of rainfall has been recorded at Wroxall in the past 48 hours – just days after a similar amount was recorded last Thursday.
Last night a flood alert was issued for the North Wight, as previously reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 10:20 – The Environment Agency says that in Langbridge, Horringford and Alverstone out of bank flooding is affecting gardens, roads and access tracks – and will continue to do so over the next 18 hours.
Golf Links Road will remain impassable today.
Over the next 2 to 3 days it’s said that the river level will continue to fall but will remain very sensitive to further rainfall and could begin to rise again if heavier rain falls.

Cleaning the drainage does help Island roads
Where would you suggest the water drains to? The drains cannot process this volume of water and the area is a floodplain.
If the drains were cleaned out more often it would help, not just when they are blocked
Why can’t they drain it into the sea? We’re on an island, the sea is never far away.
Or dig drainage ditches alongside the roads that go through the mashes in Sandown etc. Or build embankments alongside the roads. None of this is beyond the capabilities of mankind surely?
Exactly. Rocket science for island roads.
Wait until Penny_Feather is built, and all the rain that now slowly soaks into the fields and is taken up by vegetation, is then covered in tarmac, slate, tiles and concrete and runs straight into the Small-brook river causing not only flooding downstream, but because of the extra water filling it, impeding the flow from upstream flow.
But, as we see it is ONLY Bembridge who have the planners on-side who stopped building there because of a trumped up perceived risk of flooding, when Ryde has a KNOWN problem with flooding.
So is it just coincidence that funny handshake prolific developer reside in Bembridge?
Although it does have an effect, it’s not the cause. Wake up, it’s global warming.
Don’t be stupid Fred.
No, it’s called weather. Weather isn’t a new phenomenon, it’s been happening since the beginning of time. The area between Sandown and Brading used to be tidal and boats would dock there and there was actually a sea wall, then they built the causeway so much of the water is now trapped.
Sell your car, switch off your electricity and find a cave to live in…Do your bit and practice what you preach, stop using your mobile phone and sell it..
You can’t control mother nature, the planet has gradually wormed up since the ice age and it will continue doing its thing with or without humans..
It’s not global warming you prat! It’s just weather, been happening for ever, just people high up are making a fortune out of it!
Welcome to rising seal levels and more and harder rain. All predicted by global warming. Who would have guessed the scientists how have been studying this for decades were right and your mate down the pub that listens to Trump was wrong.
You made the bed, time to lay in it.
Only if a water-bed!
As fossil records show. LONG before humans were here massive climate changes have ocured throughout the history of Earth.
Humans have only been around 2m years, yet LIFE here, has been here for hundreds of millions of years and the climate changed drastically more than now ‘without’ us having to ‘take the blame’ which is brainwashed into the thick to feel guilty, so as those with vested interests can then make huge sums of money from us by selling ‘Green’ ways of life which will make zero difference.
But you believe what you want and I know, from fossil records I am correct.
You sit in the glimmer of a 10w bulb, wrap up in rugs, whilst the rich live with hot tubs, heated pools in 15 bed heated mansions
Climate change happens naturally over millions of years.
We’re making it happen within a thousand.
You lot are smoking something heavy
I think you will find although earths climate has shifted from hot to cold and back to hot again it normally takes tens of thousands of years for this to happen. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution temperatures have climbed much quicker than they would have done without man’s presence. Close to 99 percent of the world’s scientists believe man made climate change is real so either they’ve got it wrong or you have.
My god you are so boring must be great having you at a dinner party!
It’s not about being boring or not, she’s right. Many more independent scientists say climate change and global warming is B.S.They are not allowed to speak. WAKE UP.
Knowledge is power. Not everyone is a ‘thick head’. Don’t be so rude.
The thumbs up or down on this site is hilarious. I pressed a thumbs up and immediately the number changed from 7 up to 11 down. I then went to other comments and they all changed to various numbers just by one press. Is this site connected to Government elections?
Something isn’t right here that’s for sure..
The numbers are playing catch up from when YOU last logged on. Nothing dodgy. If you leave this site and revisit in 24hrs, the numbers would increase wouldn’t they because more people have voted.
It would also help if they dredged the river and got rid of all the silt that is there, years ago they used to do it and then it wouldn’t flood the road, or is that to much to ask these days!
On this island it obviously is!!!!!!!
And they want to build more homes on the Island.
The island cannot cope now!
So why are the council not getting the pumps out and start draining it and clearing the drainsc. That’s why we pay council tax isn’t it or part of it
