Eastern Eye, an Indian takeaway and restaurant in Sandown, has received a 1-star food hygiene rating after Environmental Health Inspectors branded it ‘very dirty’ and found that the general standard of hygiene was ‘poor’.
The establishment, located on the High Street in Sandown, has not scored higher than a 2 rating since 2019. Another 2-star rating was given when inspectors visited in 2021.
At the latest inspection, which took place on 26th January this year, no fewer than 17 faults were found in the operation of the business.
Among the most serious faults found were vegetable samosas found stored next to raw meat and the storage of foodstuffs in an open tray on the floor of the store cupboard, in a location where pests could easily access.
It was also stated that during the visit various utensils used in the cooking and preparation of food such as bowls had dirty and mouldy handles, whilst pots and pans were also dirty. The floors throughout the premises including in the kitchen were dirty too with food debris visible on the floor of a dry store cupboard. Shelves in that store cupboard were also black with mould.
Several repairs need to undertaken to the walls, which were found to have large areas of unexposed plaster, as well as the ceilings, which were damaged and the dry store cupboard, fridge, shelves – which all had water damage and mould. The sink which was also riddled with mould.
Inspectors noted that the doors to 3 of the dry stores had doors that were ill-fitting meaning that pests could possibly access them and that handwash basins weren’t easily accessible with access points blocked.
At the time of the visit and at the time of the last one in 2021 the business hadn’t completed the allergens section of the safer food better business pack. Other administrative issues included diary sheets and date labelling on stocks.
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the Doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 10
Compliance with structural requirements – 20
Confidence in management/control procedures – 10
Total score: 40 (1 rating)
Eastern Eye has been approached for a statement, which is expected in due course.

There’s gotta be cheap takeaways there! Get them while you can!!
If it is that bad and has been since 2019 no improvement in 2021 then shut it down to protect the public, the owners clearly have no interest in running it properly or taking any notice of food inspections.
Mould, mould, mould I won’t be eating there!
Sounds like a desirable place to purchase from NOT glad I have never used this place and never will ,
but feel sorry for people who have
As I’ve said, the food and staff (I’ve found) were very good, but you never know what’s going on behind closed doors
Health and hygiene say in report Hygiene is generally satisfactory. Bit confusing that, so samosas stored by raw meat and mouldy bowls is generally satisfactory? FFS
It should be ahut down permantly
If they can’t be arsed getting higher than a 2, suggests the hygiene rating doesn’t make any difference to their business. Which says a lot in itself.
Vote with your feet and wallet !
No excuse for dirt and poor hygiene.
Should be shut down , immediately……
Had a curry from there a few months ago, first and last time ever going, absolutely awful, the one up the road on the corner is much better and cheaper
Personally i do not eat from many of these types of restaurants
due to their uncleanliness.
This pandemic has not taught many people the importance of hygiene.
Certain establishments should be closed down.
Disgusting . All food establishments should be made to display their food hygiene rating scores , not give them a choice .
They should be closed down immediately before someone is seriously ill. !
I had food poisoning there the other week I’m sure so sick, never again
No sympathy, any fool can knock up a Curry, and so why encourage such unhealthy eating places here?
I’ve never seen more than four people in the since its been open!
Clearly saving money on cleaners!
It’s a shame, looks alright from the outside!
You just never can tell what’s lurking in the back!
Sack the chef and start again!
The reviews on Tripadvisor are generally very positive. Funny how people expect to get the sh*ts after a curry as if it is a natural consequence. “Enjoyed the meal but got the sh*ts of course”. Eating a meal from a clean curry house will not give you the sh*ts. If you have a curry and you get the sh*ts, you have food poisoning. This can range from the mild sh*ts to severe vomiting and diarrhoea but generally caused by different doses of various bacteria. We should all ask to look in the kitchen before ordering.
Mouldy bowls and all this time i thought it was decoration.
‘Mouldy Bowls’.Has a certain ring to it for a newer enterprise?
Perhaps a toilet manufacturer?
Well well well, yet another scanty place to eat. Reminds me to eat at home with your own ingredients and your own way of cleaning.. why does this happen in this day and age, and why can people not have clean places of hygiene
Maybe look up the definition of “scanty” because you don’t know what it means.
