A car has left the road and crashed into trees lining Middle Road between Carisbrooke and Calbourne, leading to the closure of the key route this afternoon (Saturday).
As adverse weather conditions continue to hit the Isle of Wight, Island Echo understands a single vehicle has come to rest down an embankment in a notorious accident blackspot between The Blacksmiths and Swainstone Manor.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are all on scene with firefighters assisting the occupant of the vehicle from the wreckage and up the embankment into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. They have accessed the vehicle using an extension ladder.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 2 appliances and a rescue tender from Newport in attendance, as well as 2 duty officers. The ambulance service has deployed an ambulance crew, a critical care paramedic and an operational commander.
Middle Road (Calbourne Road) is blocked in both directions with closures between the junctions of Betty Haunt Lane and Elm Lane.
UPDATE @ 16:40 – The Smart Roadster has come to rest on its side a notable distance off the road, thankfully avoiding any significant impact.
The driver is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment. No serious injuries have been sustained.
Middle Road has now reopened in both directions with recovery of the crashed vehicle to be arranged at an alternative time.
UPDATE SUNDAY – Police have confirmed that no serious injuries were sustained in yesterday’s crash, and that no offences have been identified at this time.

The Middle Road is another island Road where
Vehicles constantly break the speed limit.
I feel sorry for the Emergency Services having to attend
to such accidents in extreme weather conditions.
Time for IW Council to put in traffic calming measures
to slow motorists down.
Motorists drive wrecklessly whether it’s a sunny day
or a stormy day.
Vehicles do not constantly break the speed limit. Sometimes some drivers may, but to say this is constant is incorrect. I assume you do not constantly break the speed limit there or do you?
A trip to Specsavers might be a good idea.
If you can’t see speeding motorists you must be
sitting at home watching TV
Speeding is Rife on Island Roads, day in day out.
If you read what you initially posted, you said “constantly”. Sometimes I have witnessed it, sometimes not. Regularly perhaps but not constantly as you suggest.
I agree about Specsavers. Make sure you do not speed “constantly” when you are going to your appointment
I wouln’t say this was wreckless. T Smart car looks completely wrecked. As to whether it was reckless driving, that is quite a high test in law. There is nothing in the report to suggest speeding. Perhaps it would be best not to speculate and wait for facts to emerge.
Take a drive along the Middle Road and
see for yourself, the amount of vehicles
that speed.
This incident might not be due to speeding.
I am just stating what I see on a regular basis
when driving along the Middle Road.
In my experience , Smart roadsters are skittish in bad weather and because they are so light are a nightmare to drive in high winds. That’s one of the reasons I no longer have a smart car
Come on everybody, wake up, it’s going to be excessive speed or / and driving under the influence, be it drink or drugs or both. There are very few genuine “accidents”.
Very true, it is the Isle of Wight after all.
Odd, as the police seem think that “and that no offences have been identified“…
Perhaps you will be a concerned citizen and put forward your evidence to support your statement. 😉
