A man who jumped into the sea from Ryde Pier was rescued by emergency services during the early hours of this morning (Friday).
Police were called to the scene of the incident on the Esplanade at 00:05 following reports of a concern for welfare. It came after a male was spotted on the railway line between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde Pier Head.
By the time officers arrived the man had entered the icy cold water and was being assisted by a member of the public.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard and Ryde Inshore Rescue were also tasked to the incident.
The casualty was soon extracted from the water and passed into the care of paramedics.
It has been confirmed that the man was taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment after suffering serious injuries. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, however.
Maybe I’m just getting old(er) but there seems to be an awful lot of idiots around these days. I know people have always done silly things like injuring themselves jumping off piers etc but it just seems like every time you go out these days there’s people doing daft things. Whether it’s idiots in cars or on bikes racing around and crashing, youths climbing buildings and throwing stuff at people, kids on electric scooters going the wrong way down one-way streets, etc etc, it just seems to be constant now.
Rant over! Hope this chap gets better and has learnt a lesson.
Definitely a lot of idiots around these days who would think nothing of causing harm to others. However, might I be permitted to suggest that it’s comments like that which cause those not supported by the system to want to end it all. Lack of compassion and understanding in an increasingly selfish society.
Shut your mouth you don’t know nothing…
So by your own admission, they do know something?
This wasn’t someone being an idiot, it was most probably a suicide attempt, I very much doubt this was someone being an ‘idiot’ for ‘fun’ it was clearly a cry for help by someone reaching a place of desperation and dispair.
you say “wasn’t being an idiot” yet then say “probably a suicide attempt” – clearly you do not know – could just be some useless drunk not realising the tide was low and hit the sand below the pier with a thud.
Think you should not comment really don’t think he would of been drunk do you it’s freezing.he’s probably finding it hard like alot of people are at the moment try caring instead sir
They used to say theres one in every village, now theres tons in every town
And I see your wearing the T shirt for yours”bravo”
Yes and your one of them
*You’re. What’s wrong? Forgot your t-shirt?
Hope the man is ok and receiving the medication he needs.. life is hard for some. Show some compassion. You don’t hide under a pier for no reason. Maybe idiot kids on electric scooters were chasing him. Get well soon
Any news updates on how the man is?
Don’t criticise you don’t know exactly what happened.
There are 2 sides to every story; the inside and the outside. Those on the outside can’t possibly know what’s on the inside. It’s just guesswork. I hope the sufferer gets some relief.
