34-year-old Thomas Evans, who broke into the bar of the Sandown hotel he was living in and stole bottles of whiskey, before then drinking them, has been ordered to pay £100 compensation.
Evans, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to burglary other than dwelling theft when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates court on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that at around 01:00 on 6th November, Evans pulled open the shutter to bar at the OYO Marina Hotel in Sandown – where he was living at the time – and took some alcohol from behind the bar totalling £100.
Evans continued to drink at the bar before moving into the lobby and consuming a large amount of single-malt whiskey. All of Evan’s antics were seen on CCTV.
Later that day, at around 10:00, Evans – who had been drinking all morning – was found by Police in a poor state, unable to talk and making no sense at all. He was arrested and taken to Newport Police Station where, when asked by officers if he broke into the bar, Evans simply replied saying ‘yes’.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client had already lost his place at the hotel in Sandown and that he has been street homeless since the event. He also added that Evans was a highly vulnerable and extremely troubled individual with many alcohol-related issues.
Magistrates sentenced Evans to a 6-month conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay £100 in compensation to the hotel.

Must have been Irish or American Whiskey as Scottish Whisky has No ‘e’.
You just saved me the time of making the same point. Thanks.
The downward spiral into a mess….
starts out by….
breaking into the bar of the Sandown hotel he was living in and stole bottles of whiskey, before then drinking them,
drinking all morning, then
found by Police in a poor state and
unable to talk and making no sense at all.
Has since lost his place at the hotel in Sandown and now,
street homeless since the event.
an extremely troubled individual with many alcohol-related issues.
ends up…throwing the goodwill of those that let him stay in the hotel, back in their faces and has become a burdensome p rick on society
Absolute scum. We are now at status critical in St Mary’s and we have to look after this gentleman on a weekly basis.
Give it a rest will yer…..yawn.
I know this bloke.
He is severely mentally ill.
There for the grace of God go I.
Drugs and alcohol will do that to you.
don’t make excuses for the burden that he is
Time to send him back to the mainland where his lot deserve to be.
Who’s my lot mate?
Sorry Tom, not me fella.
F’em, get well soon.
STOP USING MY NAME ! (cretin).
Unable to pay the £100 also.
Nicest homeless person on the island
Ironically same chap that was run over in sandown a month prior. I told you he would bounce back
Yep me, was a complicated few days. Not that that is an excuse
I really hope this isn’t the same Tom Evans I used to work with, because if so he’s one of the nicest guys (and very good at his job)I ever worked with.
I would just like to offer that man a whiskey
So I’ve just read that a man who damaged a sign and stabbed a door got a £ 40 pound fine what is wrong with our magistrates. I know the man stole and he broke in to the hotel yes it wrong and he broke the law but please tell me which is more dangerous obviously the man that stabbed the door had an offensive weapon to stab the door in the first place or am I the only one thinking this .
Not me FFS , have nice life and not saying that sarcastically x
You know very little about this Mr b lox. I am Tom and actually this came about from defending a woman from a supposed sex offender.yes it ultimately looks bad but if it was your daughter or partner u hopefully would have done the same! Wasn’t about the booze:)
Sounds like someone’s hit the bottle again. What has breaking into a bar got to do with defending a woman from a supposed sex offender
Leave the bloke alone, he deserves a bit of support.
lf you heard his story you maybe a bit more sympathetic.
