A 59-year-old man has suffered serious facial injuries following an assault in Ryde yesterday evening (Friday).
Police were called to Augusta Road, off Spencer Road, at 17:48 to reports of a man being assaulted.
On arrival, almost an hour later, officers located a man with facial injuries in the vicinity of Wellington Court. He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Hampshire Constabulary say that the man’s injuries are believed to be serious.
Witnesses have described seeing the offender fleeing the area via the sea wall, getting rather wet in the process. The male then ran along Spencer Road in the direction of town.
A 31-year-old man from Newport was located by Police on the High Street and arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.

An hour to arrive at an assault in progress !!!!
Probably too busy arresting/beating with truncheons, someone who used a ‘bad, naughty’ word on twitter.
Did I read that right… ‘on arrival, an hour later??. Now I know there will be many occasions when there is no urgency to attend a crime, but come on if you get reports someone is being assaulted then surely that is classed as high priority. What’s to say that the assault wouldn’t have ended up in the victims being stabbed or repeatedly being assaulted to the point he is left with brain damage or some form of other live changing injury, or more seriously, death.
If it had been a minor road accident there would have been 5 police cars there and the helicopter in case any one does a runner.
1 hour that’s quick! Lol
Yes and if it was a officer getting assaulted there would have been every cop on the island there within minutes
Too busy checking all are abiding the convid rules
the victim should have tweeted some nasty words – the police would have been there in 5 minutes.
I cannot believe the offender waited around in Ryde for an hour. They probably went after him before seeing the victim
No police for an hour and the chap did not give one hoot. Wondering about with his shirt off for a good hour before he casually walked back into Ryde town.
Another example of how violent our Island has become, there will be lots more after our Island becomes a concrete hell hole..
always been violent. Just reported more.
The cry of those afraid to admit it is all getting so much worse. Wait until P f eather is filled with the mainland, and ‘worlds’ finest.
Are people from the main land bad. Sorry no they are not
I’ve heard P Feathers has been allocated to all the let’s say, visitors arriving on UK soil on a one way trip, never to return to their mother land. Got Priti Patel, Home Secretary from the Government to thank for for this!!!!!
Any facts to back that up?
Best increase the maternity ward, r ape crisis centre and re open Parkhurst then. The ruination of the entire western world.
Why tarnish all with the same brush. I’ve met more scum bags on the island in 10 years than I did growing up in central London for 30 years. Think it’s the extra toe the island inbreds have.
You can move back if you hate it here that much.
Makes you wonder what what else our underfunded and understaffed police have had to deal with while this was going on. Must have been a busy shift and I don’t envy those having to work with clearly so little resources available to them.
Better off ringing the local supermarket or take away as that’s where the police usually are to be found – having another well deserved break NOT – lazy lot
That is an absolute disgrace. The Police should have been in immediate attendance. Shame on them for an absolute failure on their part.
guess you have to consider that the island only has about 12 coppers available at any one time and with over 140,000 residents – they probably were busy beating down the door of someone who tweeted something
They are lucky the police turned up ,some weeks back there was a abusive customer in a bank ,the staff called the police .They didn’t turn up at all ,the poor staff had to deal with him ,having to get him out of the bank ,locking the doors ,trying to protect the customers. While this man was then trying to kick the door in .
I was told by an officer that in the evening there are around 9 officers on duty for the whole island. This was an earlier call out in a busy part of the island. Where are they? Patrolling streets looking for covid offenders? This is ridiculous. There were 6 people fighting in shanklin for over an hour last week. Police arrived 3 hours later and couldn’t see anything happening!
