A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act following an 8-hour standoff with Police in Newport last night (Sunday).
Police responded to an address on Godric Road at 19:11, but it wasn’t until around 03:00 this morning that the situation was finally resolved.
Officers armed with protective shields were seen outside a block of flats throughout the evening, with paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service seen to arrive during the early hours.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called at 19:11 on Sunday 5 December to assist the Health Service in detaining a man under the Mental Health Act at an address in Godric Road, Newport”.
The man was taken to St Mary’s mental health unit for further assessment and treatment.
Clearly ‘care’ or lack of, in the community, isn’t working. Cheaper to house the lot under one huge roof than inflict them on normal people to suffer.
One large institution rather than thousands of individual rent council tax, and heating bills etc would be much cheaper safer and better for them
And a hell of a lot better for the neighbours.
These flats are privately owned, nothing to do with the council. Clearly a lack of knowledge and intelligence on your part.

What is a normal person? Seriously that isn’t very nice. Mental health issues doesn’t make a person abnormal.
I have got serious mental health issues , but there’s no need to separate them , the community should be made aware of there condition because it’s a lonely place to be when things in your head are not going so well , then maybe a coffee with a neighbor would go a long way , I’m right behind you in your message . The line of duty of care is spread long enough as it is , hence why police are called to deal with people with mental issues , because 7 acres don’t have the staff to deal with them . I feel sorry for them and would invite any one with mental issues into my home for a coffe if I thought they had issues !
