UPDATED: 58-year-old David Arthur Hopkins has been charged with a number of offences, including arson with intent, following 2 incidents at Sunset Close in Freshwater earlier this week.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to a bungalow on Sunset Close on Monday night over fears the property was on fire. However, it has since been confirmed that a smoke grenade was posted through the property’s letterbox. A 53-year-old man was treated at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation.
Just 12 hours later, on Tuesday morning, emergency services were once again called to the address after a substance was thrown at the occupant – thought to be the same 53-year-old gentleman.
Detectives investigating the 2 incidents have charged David Arthur Hopkins, also of Sunset Close, with causing arson with intent, possession of a probated weapon (x2) and purchasing a prohibited weapon (x2).
He has been remanded in custody and will appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court in Newport today.
UPDATE @ 14:30 – Mr Hopkins’ case has been committed to the Isle of Wight Crown Court. He will appear before the court on 25th March.
He has been granted conditional bail until that time.
