A Ryde man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman in her 20s on Newport High Street during the early hours of this morning (Saturday).
Police have confirmed that they are investigating a report of a rape that occurred at around 02:45 on High Street, Newport.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a cordon has been established around the Slug & Lettuce bar with the pavement and 2 alleyways sealed off.
Hampshire Constabulary says that a 36-year-old man from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody at this time.
The alleged victim, a woman in her 20s, is receiving specialist support at this time.
UPDATE @ 15:45 – Officers have carried out enquiries throughout today and no offences have been identified.
The man arrested has been released with no further action.
How did we go from such a serious incident to….nothing happened,cry wolf and CCTV proved otherwise?
Well, well, well – this woman needs charging with false accusation, wasting police time, conduct likely to cause distress to the real victim – the man and then she should be jailed for the same length of time, that a convicted rapist would actually get – for lying, wasting everyones time and damaging this mans future.
It could be that or the victim doesn’t want to go to court and her identity known so the police have to witness or victim to base a case on (it is sad that some victims of heinous crimes feel this way.
It might be less traumatic than everyone on the island knowing your name and as the island is a close knitted community it might stop her from geting a job in future as the owner of the business might know the suspect and not believe her

If that was the case, then she wouldn’t have reported it in the first place, as she would already know, that once the ball gets rolling, it all comes out in court and everyone will know who she is.

Spot on Mark. Why are thinking people surprised in the thankfully rare case that a spurned or angry woman (for whatever reason) cries rape falsely? It is also one of the hardest criminal offences to prove for all sorts of obvious reasons. That’s why the conviction rate ( not the prosecution rate) is so low
so disappointing to read this a story, a man’s life could have been ruined, this woman should be charged , it’s to easy for a woman to cry rape and this woman clearly got drunk did something consensual that she later regretted and therefore played the card ! I had a business on the island and we caught a woman stealing from us and upon being caught she then played the “sexual harassment” at work card to deviate from what she had done but making demands of £££££’s in compensation! This woman who has accused this man should definitely be charged for wasting police time at the least.
Had a similar experience with a lazy and dishonest carer,this one tried pulling the “race” card. its lucky for the guy involved here his name was not given, the accuser should be named to protect other men.

Since this story still appears on the front page perhaps a change of headline might be appropriate given that the man was found to have done nothing wrong and released.
