Armed Police were rushed across the Solent in response to concerns about a man armed with a knife in Newport yesterday lunchtime (Tuesday).
It was at around 12:20 that the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service alerted Police to concerns for the welfare of a man in the vicinity of Buckbury Lane, off Staplers Road.
The specifics of the report prompted the deployment of local Authorised Firearms Officers, supported by mainland-based colleagues from the Joint Operations Unit.
It’s estimated that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Marine Unit was travelling at speeds in excess of 40 knots as they headed down the River Medina from Southampton.
Police say the man at the heart of the incident was located and attended St Mary’s Hospital. Island Echo is told he was later pursued by officers as he left the hospital grounds towards B&Q superstore, but returned of his own accord.
It has been confirmed that a knife was recovered by Armed Police following a search of open space off Buckbury Lane.
This led to the arrest of a 34-year-old man from Ryde on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
He has since been released from custody without charge, but remains under investigation.
No one was injured during the incident, Police say.
