A Somerset man who took a car from an address in Newport before crashing it on The Downs has pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking.
Daniel McCarthy, 22, of Priest Row in Wells, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Friday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police attended a field at the top of The Downs at around 08:50 on 10th October 2022 after a black Kia Ceed was found damaged near the junction with Brading Downs Road.
The car had been stolen by McCarthy in a burglary at an address on Shide Road in Newport overnight after he found the vehicle unlocked with the keys inside.
McCarthy was interviewed by Police and made full admissions of taking the vehicle and driving it.
Defending, Adrian Dodd said that McCarthy had been out in Newport and was a long way from his uncle’s address in Bembridge and therefore he stupidly made the decision to drive the vehicle without his glasses on.
Magistrates ordered to case be adjourned to allow an ‘all-options’ pre-sentence report to be compiled. McCarthy will next appear before Magistrates in Bristol on 17th July. He has been released on unconditional bail until that time.

Expensive mistake by the owner won’t be covered by insurance keys left in it unlocked
Who does that, and who would check for cars with keys in the ignition? Seems like he was either lent the car or he’s being paid to be a fall guy.
The defence statement had me in stitches, his mistake was to make the stupid decision not to wear his glasses when he had stolen a car belonging to someone else – should have gone to SPECSAVERS !!!!!
Wow, made a mistake of not putting his glasses on says his defence. I can think of a lot more issues than that.
