A brewery on the Isle of Wight has marked Beer Day Britain by highlighting a special ale that is helping raise vital funds for local charity, Mountbatten.
Yates’ Brewery in Newchurch has been donating 5p from the sale of every bottle of its ‘Old Man Yatesy’ to the Island hospice charity whose care supported brewery founder David Yates Senior before his death in October 2025.
The dark ale was named in honour of David, with the recipe based on his original brewing methods.
David’s son, also named David Yates, said the family wanted to give something back following the care his father received.
David Yates has said:
“The treatment my dad got from Mountbatten, Isle of Wight was unreal, unbelievable. We wanted to give something back.”
Mountbatten Isle of Wight provides round-the-clock end-of-life care, with around 85% of its support delivered in patients’ homes across the Isle of Wight. The charity also operates its Inpatient Unit and day services from the John Cheverton Centre in Newport.
‘Old Man Yatesy’ is a 7.2% ABV dark ale that features notes of raisins, plum and roasted malt, with oats and wheat providing a warming finish and is brewed in small batches by head brewer Josh Davies at the brewery’s Newchurch base.
Although Beer Day Britain was celebrated on Monday (15th June), donations to Mountbatten Isle of Wight are generated from every bottle sold throughout the year, helping ensure David Yates Senior’s legacy continues to support Island families.
