Liz Truss has today (Monday) been revealed as the country’s next Prime Minister, with talks that she will announce tax cuts and a £100billion package to tackle the cost of living within a matter of days.
In the coming days, Truss is expected to reveal a wide range of measures to help with the energy and cost of living crisis, which could include freezing the wholesale cost of gas produced in Britain in a bid to drive down bills. Liz says she has a bold plan to see Britain through these difficult times.
Both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss will fly to Balmoral tomorrow for separate audiences with Her Majesty The Queen, after which Liz will take over from Johnson to become the 4th Conservative PM in just 6 years.
Liz beat fellow candidate Rishi Sunak by 20,927 votes, receiving 81,326 vs Rishi’s 60,399. She received 57.3% of the vote, which saw a 82.6% turnout.
The new look Cabinet will be announced either on Tuesday or Wednesday, followed by major announcements on taxes and rescue packages on Thursday. So, perhaps by the end of the week, Islanders will have a clearer idea of how the Autumn and Winter months will play out.
47-year-old Liz, real name Mary Elizabeth Truss, was elected as a Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk in 2010. Since then, she has risen up through the Conservative Party to become Foreign Secretary – and now the most powerful woman in the country as the 56th Prime Minister.
It was at the start of August that Liz paid a visit to the Isle of Wight with hopes of securing votes from local Tory members.

They use proportional representation in their election and yet, for some reason, the people can’t have it for the general election.
How so? Only one position to fill, how is it proportional?
But it still begs the question – why can’t we have PR?
As I understand it, they use the single transferable vote. This means if the candidate you do not want wins, your vote is then cast for your second choice. PR is not perfect, but the single transferable vote is considered the best option. It is what is used in the EU and other parts of the democratic world.

Thank God! the long winded Tory leadership race is finally over. Rishi Sunak or Lizz Truss? To me it was like asking ‘who you would prefer to be your kids babysitter, Jimmy Saville or Rolf Harris?

The Tory MPs did not vote her as first choice (our Island MP did), our MP also voted to keep Boris as PM, the writing is on the wall, Truss won’t last long, Bob always backs a looser.
The Conservatives won’t survive in government much longer, Bob will be our MP on the Island until HE decides to step down, if every conservative MP lost their seat at the next election Bob would be the Tory leader of a one-man party as the only elected Tory MP.
Tory MPs selected her and Sunak to go forward to the membership vote. Truss was chosen over Sunak by Tory party members.
Whatever way you look at it out PM was chosen by Tories, and Tories alone.
