Could this woman be the next Prime Minister? Liz Truss has arrived on the Isle of Wight in a bid to secure votes from local Conservative members as she vies to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and the country.
The Foreign Secretary is giving a talk to members of the Isle of Wight Conservative Association at the Island Riding Centre on the outskirts of Newport this afternoon (Friday). She will be hoping to win the support of Islanders as she goes up against Rishi Sunak, who will be on the Island tomorrow (Saturday).
Secrecy has surrounded the visit and there has been no press call – unlike when Boris Johnson visited the Isle of Wight in 2019 and posed in front of the Union Jack building in East Cowes. Liz also visited Wight Shipyard today but with any fanfare.
However, Liz was more than happy to wave to a small crowd when she arrived on the Island via hovercraft earlier on, touching down at Ryde at 14:15.
Hustings are taking place across the country as Truss and Sunak both work to secure vital votes from Party members, with Liz Truss the current favourite to lead the country forward. Last night she said that a recession is ‘not inevitable’ if ‘bold’ action is taken, suggesting that big changes are afoot if she gets into power.
Rishi Sunak will be in the Sandown area at lunchtime tomorrow – but can he win over the Island’s Tory membership?
The new leader will be announced on 5th September.

I’m afraid you’re right, Ed. If this toxic woman gets the leadership, we won’t have an NHS anymore. It will be fully destroyed and replaced by an American owned agency. They’ve been nibbling away at for years now – this will be the final straw. So sad.

I hope so, only the low life get everything for free now. The NHS are overpaid and many are lazy, especially in the mental health areas where cash has been poured in, and people on massive salaries do very very little I know for a fact.
Why would they do that ?
Profits for friends and family. If you can’t afford it, too bad. Have you or anyone you know tried to get an NHS dentist recently? That’s the way healthcare is shifting.
It’s the obsession with “small state” and “low taxes”. They simply don’t want to afford the NHS. Or Social Care, Or basic ameniteis like public transport, essential utilities, local democracy …

I am retired after 55 years of work and the Tories are definitely not my party, so less of the stereotyping.
Just because you don’t support the Conservative Party doesn’t change the fact that their core voter demographic, particular on the Isle of Wight, is the wealthy and the elderly, because it certainly is.
