LITTERING IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY CONTINUES – FLY-TIPPING FIGURES UP YEAR-ON-YEAR

The number of fly-tipping incidents on the Isle of Wight has once again increased year-on-year, new figures reveal. Data published in the Isle of Wight Council’s quarterly cabinet report confirms that there were 60 more fly-tipping incidents between July and September 2023 than the same period in the previous year. A total of 290 fly-tipping incidents were recorded in the Council’s Q2 period, compared to 230 in 2022. Despite the increase in incidents, there were fewer actions taken against those illegally dumping waste – 7 enforcements compared to 17 dealt with in Q2 last year. It is hoped that the recent introduction of same-day booking at recycling sites across the Island will help reduce this number, a figure that has been rising in recent years since the COVID pandemic and the introduction of stricter rules for accessing local tips.
