The National Chair of the Brewery History Society, Jeff Sechiari, has helped launch the new Shanklin Historic Pub Walk at the iconic Crab Pub in Shanklin Old Village.
Jeff joined the Chair of IW Camra, John Nicholson, and representatives from local pubs and Shanklin Town Council in launching the new initiative earlier this week.
The walk includes current pubs in the Old Village, along the Esplanade and across the Town, as well as outlining the sites of former public houses such as the Marine, Green Dragon, Clarendon and Madiera Bars.
Shanklin Town Council are supporting the walk with a grant.
Jeff Sechiari said:
“It has been a real pleasure researching this walk and appreciating the history of the Town, and how pubs have been at the heart of its development over the years – we hope to develop the walk for next year, and to extend to other towns on the Island”.
John Nicholson added:
“The Shanklin walk will feature in the forthcoming Beer Buses and Walks weekend of 14th and 15th October, and we are working with Visit Isle of Wight, to ensure local pubs, accommodation providers and businesses benefit from the event, and that visitors learn about our rich heritage”.
Richard Priest, who has helped research the walk, concluded:
“Shanklin has a rich heritage and history, and this map and walk helps celebrate for visitors on the Beer and Bus weekend, and can be replicated across the Island in the future”.
